| cashcoast's Full Review: Digimon: Digital Monsters |
The monster genre for Anime (or, for the lesser learned in Japanese-American culture, Japanese Animation) has always been a big pocket of income. When Pokemon hit it big, Toei (Japanese owner of Digimon)/Bandai couldn't help but make a Digimon cartoon, as well.
Many, many originally-Pokemon fans claim Digimon to be a rip-off. While this is not true, it shares similarities with the Pocket Monster show, in that you have monster things and people.
That said, Digimon is almost totally unique. Depending on what season you're looking at (01 (J: Adventure), 02, or 03 (J: Tamers)), Digimon does this and that.
With 01/Adventure, you have a somewhat repetetive show. At the beggining, it's mainly find a Digimon, fight, partner Digimon digivolves. However, it does take turns of events, such as when they met Devimon for the first time, or when Angemon was first shown. As the season progressed, the plot became a tad thicker, but there were still very annoying puns.
I find puns to be evil. To a point.
Then we hit Season 2, where we find it's 4 years after the Digidestined in 01 defeated the big, big enemy, Apocalamon. We have two main returning Digidestined, and 3 new members to the small team. While season 2 was much more in depth and had a lot of twists and exciting adventure, there were a couple of plot holes. I had the feeling that the writers were rushed to finish it off, due to who knows what.
For example, we never found out more about the dark ocean or the monster we saw after Kari went back into the 'real world'. We don't know how Daemon is linked to the Dark Spores. We don't even know how Daemon fared in the Dark Ocean world.
Still, it was a good season.
Now that we're in season three, things have gotten more interesting and cooler. The Digivolution sequences are very spiffy, and we actually have some suspense.
All in all, Digimon is great for a young one's imagination and love of Saturday morning cartoons. Don't we all? While some of the parts could have been 'Americanized' better (meaning, that the transition between the Japanese version and American version,) the whole thing is still pretty good.
Tamers/03 takes care of a lot of puns, too.
