Get Real is the best new program I have seen in years. Even though it is listed under teen shows, I feel that it appeals to a much wider age range. I am 28 and this is one of my three can't miss it shows. One of my co-workers is in her 50's and she watches this show on a regular basis.
I really relate to the family composition as it mirrors that of my own family (3 kids - the oldest a girl, the younger two boys). The bond that the siblings exhibits reminds me of the one I shared with my own brothers.
The show deals with real problems that an ordinary family may face. I have felt good about most of the ways they have dealt with issues, except teen sex. The potrayal of Meghan and her boyfriend and how "easy" it was for her (emotionally) just didn't quite set right with me. Teen sex is a serious issue and they should have shown maybe a little unsureness on her part about what she had just done. An issue I felt they dealt with in a more realistic way was when Cam got sent to the alternative school. My family has had to deal with that issue and it is a tough one. The alternative school is filled with many kids who are just plain trouble; not ones like Cam who made a few mistakes, but overall are good kids from nice families. I was glad the dad made the choice not leave Cam in that environment. Other issues that have been dealt with are chances for infidelity, financial problems, severe illness of one child and violence/handgun issues.
I think this show is a great one and hope that it will continue next season. It is rare that I find a show that I can relate to the characters like I do the characters on this show. I would recommend that parents be prepared to discuss issues that come up in the show with teens. The issues that are dealt with can provide a great springboard for discussion.
