Once upon a time, there was a show called "Saturday Night Live". It was the funniest, most controversal show on the airwaves. However, soon enough, the show began to go down the gutter. Everyone thought the hope for late night sketch comedy was lost. Then, along comes "MADtv".
MADtv is an hour-long sketch comedy show currently airing Saturday nights at 11 on FOX. It debuted in 1995, and has been on the air for over a decade. It was made to be an alternative to the quickly dying SNL, and as a replacement for the already deceased In Living Color.
When MADtv first started out, it was a little rough. It's first year was very up-and-down and sometimes tried a little too hard to get controversy. Luckily, around 1996/1997, the show really came into it's own. Fast foward to 2007, and it's still one of the freshest, funniest comedies on TV.
A great thing about MADtv is that it's not afraid to push the limit. Many of it's sketches are on the edge and even push it at times. One that comes to mind is an alternate ending of "The Sound of Music", where the Von Trapp family turns into Nazis and sings about their hatred for Jews and their plan for them, or a recurring sketch about a kids TV show called the Reading Caboose, where it's two hosts educate the children of the show...with government conspiracy theories. One of them included Marilyn Monroe and included a picture book about her - showing her in bed with President Kennedy...on a kids show.
MADtv also makes fun of everyone and everything. Unlike SNL, which seems to lean more towards liberal views, MADtv makes fun of both sides. MADtv also makes fun of all races, blacks, asians, indians, whites...ect, so in a way, it's so politically incorrect, it IS politically correct.
Admittely, MADtv did have a few bumps along the road. Many times, the show would fall into a bit of a slump, and it had two, maybe three tops, bum seasons. One of these was around 2002, one around 2004, and one being it's first year. Still, a bottom of the barrel MADtv season still provides lots of laughs.
All in all, this is a great, underappreciated show.
