I guess you could call WB the main place for teens or young adults to go to check out shows that would interest or even remotely relate to them. Popular is a rather new show in it's second season I believe.
When I first saw the show my first thoughts were "How unrealistic can you get?!". They portrayed High School life in such a dramatic and comical way it just seemed unreal all together. I watched the first few shows when it first came on and though surely it was not going to last.
Popular revolves around a few groups of student "clicks" like in regular high school. It mainly focuses on to popular clicks in high school, one group is the cheerleaders and jocks of the school and the second group is nothing like that but they are the type that refuse to brown nose and be like the popular crowd just to be liked. Ocasionally they show the outcasts which consists of about four other students in the school.
I was watching a few episodes recently and I saw them deal with some very serious issues. One consited of a student boy getting Lukemia and having to go to the hospital to have the tests and wait for a positive donor. This actually spanned out a little bit up until about a week ago when they did a spin off of It's a wonderful life calling it It's a Popular Life.
An angel showed him what the world would have been like if he would not have been born. After he discovered that the world would be a better place with him in it, he decides that he wants to live and doesn't want to be dead anymore. He wakes up and goes back to his hospital room where all his friends are and ends up finding out that one of them is a match for him. I was actually touched by this show (I don't know maybe it's my pregnancy hormones kicking in), but I realized that they showed me with this show that no matter how bad things may be, never give up hope because miracles do happen.
They did another Christmas spin off of A Christmas Carol calling it A Popular Christmas Carol. This one was not as touching or emotional to me as the first one they did. But it was cute and sweet at the end seeing the heartless person turn into such a giving soul.
This is not a perfect show, but nonetheless it is still fun to watch occasionally. (I guess you could call me a closet watcher now LOL). I do see some episodes that remind me slightly of what it was like in high school, I mean it hasn't been THAT long for me just yet.
Popular, is a slight dose of reality with a bit of comical attitude added to it. Showing you how hard it was to be the popular ones, the ones who yearned to fit in, the outcasts of school or the ones who seemed to be (or were) happy being who they were most of the time. This is what makes the show such a hit and so corny at times too. It's just too bad that high school couldn't have been as easy to laugh at as this show is.
