Although aimed at a demographic consisting of junior high school and high school aged children, Popular has made a fan out of this 26 year old viewer. The witty dialogue and subtle humor (as well as the humor of the not so subtle variety) won me over from the debut pilot episode. What a fantastic idea! Two girls from two different ends of the high school social spectrum, Brooke, from the popular "Glamazons" and Sam, from the geeky "Alternatives", forced to reside together when their parents marry, leads to an infinite amount of unusual yet amusing and humorous situations.
Surrounded by an extremely capable and effective supporting cast, these characters are able to address many contemporary issues facing high school students (many of which those of us out of high school have already dealt with, although perhaps, not in the same manner nor with the same outcomes). The chemistry between the cast is obvious in every scene; they integrate together seamlessly.
The Glamazons and the Alternatives, although often stereotyped, occasionally step out of their caste, leading to the underlying theme of the series - popularity and being accepted. I believe that any person, in or out of high school can relate to the experience of these teenagers, and viewing just one episode of the series will prove my point.
