| mstrauch's Full Review: I Love Lucy |
I have been a fan of I Love Lucy since I was a child. And since I wasn't around when the show first aired, all I can say is thank goodness for Nick at Nite!
Here you have a show that's been on since the 1950's, and it continues to thrive through the wonder of re-runs. It doesn't contain the violence that saturates much of TV and movies these days. And as for sexual content, there wasn't any. The Ricardo's didn't even share a bed. And when Lucy was pregnant with their son, the word pregnant was never even used. She was in a "delicate condition" or in the "family way". I Love Lucy didn't need to use anything salacious or flashy to be entertaining. To put it plainly, it was wholesome entertainment.
Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were married both on and off screen. And though their marriage had begun to fail by the time the show became successful, their on screen coupling was always a joy to watch. Vivian Vance and William Frawley as Fred and Ethel Mertz were also the perfect complement to Ball's somewhat slapstick style of comedy. They made the perfect straight man, and woman. And Lucy never failed to get them involved in her schemes. They did everything from steal John Wayne's footprints in Hollywood to hunt for gold together.
I think TV today is seriously lacking in shows that can be enjoyed by the whole family, no matter the age of the viewer. To this day, probably 15 years after I watched my first episode, I Love Lucy still makes me laugh.
