Little Bill is a recent addition to the Nickelodeon morning lineup, but one that my children and I have taken an immediate liking to.
This animated series is based on a series of books by funnyman Bill Cosby. It centers around 5 year old "Little Bill", who is the youngest child of 3 in a very loving, supportive home. The most common settings for episodes are the Little Bill's school and his home.
Lessons, lessons everywhere. Just by sharing Little Bill's daily experiences, viewers get a pretty realistic view of life as a 5 year old. The events that happen at school and home that influence a child's day and life so much. Sometimes we, as adults, forget how strongly words and events can affect younger people.
Little Bill has friends at school, and these friends can present situations for him to deal with, and learn lessons from. A recent episode had a new student to come in and start a game where the kids insulted each other for laughs. Not only did we learn that it is wrong and hurtful to do this, but we also learned that 1. sometimes words shouldn't hurt and we should just ignore insults; 2. laughing something off is the best way to deal with certain situations; 3. two wrongs don't make a right- don't do something wrong just because someone else does; and 4. sometimes people need a chance to be your friend- forgive and let them have that chance.
This all came from one typical episode. Each and every one has something special to offer. Funny thing was, you have to really think about it to realize that you are not just being entertained. These morals and lessons come so easily that it is easy to forget that Little Bill isn't just fun and games- it is also about learning some of the rules and lessons of the real world.
I like the character of the father in this series very much. While both parents are loving and wonderful, the father ("Big Bill") is very free with his affection, and tries to guide Little Bill while letting him make up his own mind. Even direct instructions are given with love and smiles. Little Bill obviously feels secure in his home environment, and is able to make important (5 year old) decisions with the confidence that I wish all children could have in themselves.
Looks like *Big* Bill (Cosby) has given us another wonderful television series. Kudos to Nickelodeon for fitting it into a perfectly wonderful morning lineup.
