Where to start?
I can remember when I first started watching Spongebob Squarepants. I was flipping through the channels and I couldn't find anything at all to watch until I turned it past Nickelodeon and saw a yellow sponge. My friends have been telling me how good the show was and I decided to just watch one episode to see what all the hooplah was about. And boy am I glad I did.
The show is about an underwater town called Bikini Bottom filled with underwater creatures who all have jobs and live normal lives just like we do. The show is focused on a yellow sponge named Spongebob and his best friend Patrick Star as they get into trouble over and over with hilarious results.
Now I'll take a little time to elaborate on the main characters a little.
Spongebob Squarepants: The main character and the star of the show. He lives in a pineapple and has a pet snail named Gary. He works at the Krusty Krab, a local burger joint where he is a fry cook and he is dedicated to his job in an obsessive way. Spongebob is hilarious and reminds me of a yellow underwater Steve Urkel. Seriously. He's smart, however he does things that an ordinary person wouldn't. He's impulsive, gullible and child-like and his admiration for life is adorable. Always a true friend, Spongebob sticks by his friends even when they don't want him around. The things I like about Spongebob is his loyalty to his friends and the way he's dedicated to his job. I also like his boyish enthusiasm and energy. I don't like how he lets people talk him into things and how easily he falls for things.
Patrick Star: Patrick is Spongebob's best friend and he is a pink starfish who lives under a rock. Not the sharpest crayon in the box, Patrick's main attributes consist of an unending appetite and a knack for turning up at the most unexpected times. He's Spongebob's most loyal friend and his duty to be there when Spongebob needs him is the trait I most admire in him. The only thing bigger than Patrick's heart is his stomach. He is also my favorite character. I like how he's so dumb but always manages to get himself out of trouble and I like how he sticks by Spongebob no matter what. I don't like how lazy he is and how he's so messy. I mean, come on, the guy's home is a pig pen.
Squidward Tentacles: Spongebob's coworker and next door neighbor, Squidward is an octopus and is one of those artsy people who live for the finer things in life. He can't stand the fact that he lives next door to Spongebob and is constantly annoyed by him and Patrick. He lives in a giant tiki head and his home is in the middle of his two most hated people in Bikini Bottom, Patrick and Spongebob. Squidward is grumpy and even though he claims to hate Spongebob, he's been known to show kindness to him in the most unexpected times. I like how Squidward has that artistic 'flair' that makes him seem sophisticated. I don't like his attitude towards Spongebob and how he always seems to try to ruin Spongebob and Patrick's good times.
Sandy Cheeks: A squirrel who lives in a tree dome. When she goes out into the water she wears a suit similar to an astronaut's suit and it allows her to breathe underwater. She's a native of Texas and her passion for Texas is only rivaled by her passion for karate. I like how Sandy is different. She's a mammal in the underwater landscape and I like how her and Spongebob always fight using karate. I don't like how she's so hotheaded and how she sometimes comes off as nothing more than a bully.
Mr. Krabs: Owner of the Krusty Krab where Spongebob and Squidward work and the creator of the KrabbyPatty. He is a crab who is desperately in love with money and more money. He is bossy and the only thing he loves more than his money is finding new ways to make money. His arch enemy is Plankton. I like Mr. Krab's admiration for the dough because he knows what he likes and he goes for it. However, I do think he takes it a little too far and his friendships lack for that reason.
Plankton: Mr. Krab's arch enemy and owner of the Chum Bucket. Plankton is in fact a plankton and his small size and stature is more then made up with by his sneakiness and conniving. He went to college with Mr. Krabs and they used to be friends until Mr. Krabs made the Krabby Patty and ran Plankton's Chum Bucket out of business. Plankton is always thinking of new ways to steal the Krabby Patty formula but has always been unsuccessful. I like how Plankton is so smart. Seriously, this guy is so smart he has a computer wife and he builds robots in an instance. I don't like how he always gets foiled so easily though.
Gary: Spongebob's pet snail. His adorable catchphrase is "Meow!" and he can usually be found in Spongebob's pineapple eating and just relaxing. He's a loyal pet and is always around when Spongebob needs cheering up. I like Gary. He's all around cute and I also think he's the perfect pet because he's not too messy, he's loyal and he always seems to comfort his owner.
I do have some things I'd like to elaborate on. How come Spongebob is square like the sponges people wash dishes with? Shouldn't he be more like the actual sponges in the water? The oddly shaped ones? But then again, I guess it wouldn't sound right to call the show "Spongebob DisshapedPants". Then there's the way Squidward is supposed to be an octopus but he has only six legs. Is that possible? Did someone cut his other two legs off or something? And how about the extra characters in the background? They all look the same with different colors. I'm serious. All of them are just skinny fish with big eyes and lips. A little variation would be nice.
But I love Spongebob, seriously, I do. His antics keep me occupied during the week although I wish they'd play something besides reruns. The show is hilarious and I always laugh when I watch it. I also like how Patrick and Spongebob get along great and their chemistry is just amazing. You actually believe they're best friends. All in all, this is a great show and I know it will be around for a long, long time. Check it out, I guarantee you'll have a smile on your face when it goes off.
