"I Smell The Smelly Smell of Something That Smells Smelly" - Spongebob Squarepants

Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Funny In A Crazy Way, Many Entertaining Episodes

Cons:A Little Too Crazy Sometimes

The Bottom Line: SpongeBob Squarepants Is The Best Show On Nickelodeon, And It Grows On You Like Algae.

After first hearing the name SpongeBob Squarepants I dismissed the very thought of giving this cartoon a chance, for one thing it sounds horrible, and I had stopped watching Nickelodeon way back in the 4th grade. I can remember once last Summer that I heard the theme song to the show while flipping through the channels, and that was an immediate turnoff, just listen to it and you'll you know what I mean. Well anyways, a little after school started I noticed that a couple people at my High School were wearing SpongeBob shirts and wouldn't stop talking about the show. The popularity of SpongeBob Squarepants has spread like a disease, I tried to avoid this show but before long I was infected, now I'm hooked.

SpongeBob Squarepants is about a young sponge named Spongebob, only he's not your ordinary sea sponge; he's shaped like one of those sponges you use in the kitchen. That's not all that's strange about spongebob, he also sports a pair of square pants, a shirt and tie; these fit his unique shape nicely. This cartoon series shows off the adventures (or misadventures) of this sponge, as he saves his favorite super heroes, hunts for jellyfish, or even just helps out one of his friends. SpongeBob Squarepants is sure to keep you entertained for 30 minutes, sometimes you'll even crave some more action.

The whole cartoon series takes place in the sea, in a small city on the ocean floor called Bikini Bottom. There is something crazy about life under the sea though; it seems a lot like life on land. For one thing, almost all of the citizens of Bikini Bottom are stuck on the ocean floor, they can't swim around or anything. Something else fishy about this series, is the fact that even though this city is under water there are beaches and lakes and even oceans. Yep, so even though these sea creatures live underwater there is still another presence of water that they can swim in and drink, just like life on land. I hope that makes sense to you, cause I sure don't understand what I just said.

The Main Characters

Spongebob Squarepants
Yeah that's his full name, it may sound incredibly stupid at first, but after hearing it a couple of times you won't even notice how bad it sounds. Spongebob is the main character of this show, he's lighthearted and very sensitive. Spongebob wears his emotions out on his sleeve, this makes for some pretty funny jokes. Spongebob works at the popular Krusty Krab fast food restaurant as a fry cook, but he always puts his friends first and would never intentionally hurt anyone. As I mentioned earlier, Spongebob is shaped like a household sponge, and usually sports a pair of square pants.

Patrick Star
This is the best character ever, Patrick is a chubby pink Starfish that isn't totally there all the time. Patrick doesn't have a job, and he lives underneath a giant rock, home sweet home? Patrick is the best friend of Spongebob, he has a big heart and always tries to help whenever he's needed, but he can also become fierce. Patrick wastes away the days by catching jellyfish with Spongebob, and his annoying laughter is enough to send anyone into laughing fits. Patrick is the funniest character in the whole show, and he always makes me laugh, especially when he puts on Spongebob's pants.

Squidward Tentacles
This is Spongebob's neighbor, he hates Spongebob and Patrick. He's always too serious and he likes to scheme, Squidward is very conceited. Squidward spends most of his days molding sculptures of himself, playing the clarinet, and practicing other fine arts. Like Spongebob, Squidward works at the Krusty Krab but doesn't like his job much, and working with Spongebob just makes it that much worse for him. Squidward is a squid, and he gets annoyed easily.

Sandy Cheeks
This character is even more bizarre than her name; Sandy Cheeks is a brown squirrel from Texas. Yeah you heard right, a squirrel from Texas that lives in the ocean, she always wears a suit so she can breathe, except when she's in her fishbowl home. Sandy is tough, she's the strongest creature in Bikini Bottom, and loves playing with Karate with Spongebob. She is a good friend of Spongebob and Patrick, but she easily gets mad at both of them.

Mr. Krabs
The owner of the Krusty Krab restaurant, Mr. Krabs is incredibly selfish and loves money above all else. Mr. Krabs uses a secret recipe for the famous Krabby Patties, but he won't tell it to anyone. The Krusty Krab is a very popular restaurant in Bikini Bottom, actually I think it's the only restaurant in Bikini Bottom besides the Chum Bucket. The only thing Mr. Krabs cares about besides money, is Pearl, one of his relatives, she may even be his daughter but I can't remember.

There are several more characters that have appearances in select episodes; there's Plankton who always tries to get the Krabby Pattie recipe for his own restaurant, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are Spongebob's 2 favorite super heroes, Gary is Spongebob's pet snail that meows like a cat, and Spongebob's parents even make a couple of appearances in the show. Of course there are plenty of other less important characters in the show, but there are too many to list.

In case that's not enough "nautical nonsense" for ya, just check out the theme song:

Are you ready kids?
Aye-aye Captain.
I can't hear you...
Aye-Aye Captain!!
Oh! Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
SpongeBob SquarePants!
Absorbent and yellow and porous is he!
SpongeBob SquarePants!
If nautical nonsense is something you wish...
SpongeBob SquarePants!
Then drop on the deck and flop like a fish!
SpongeBob SquarePants!

That's the song that plays right at the beginning of the show, if you can get past the theme song then you're doing good!

A Couple of My Favorite Episodes

This is my favorite episode so far, it's extremely funny. The episode starts with Plankton; the nemesis of Mr. Krabs almost escaping with a crabby patty, but he's caught by Spongebob and is called a loser and shunned by the citizens of Bikini Bottom. Spongebob feels really bad for Plankton, "He wouldn't be so mean if he had just one friend", and so Spongebob heads over to the Chum Bucket and asks Plankton if he wants to come play with him. Plankton decides to go play with Spongebob, but only to get the Krabby Patty recipe. Plankton doesn't even know what Fun is though, so Spongebob sings him the Fun song. What's the fun song you ask? Well it goes something like this:

"F" is for friends who do stuff together, "U" is for u and me, "N" is for nywhere & nytime at all, down in the deep blue sea.

Plankton then gives the Fun song a try:

"F" is for fire burning down the whole town, "U" is for uranium - bombs, "N" is for no survivors

Well Plankton starts to like this whole "fun thing", but Spongebob eventually finds out about Planktons scheming.

No Weenies Allowed
Spongebob and Sandy decide to go to the Salty Spitoon; the toughest club in Bikini Bottom. Sandy gets in alright, but the doorman won't let Spongebob inside, he's not tough enough. Spongebob is then pointed in the direction of the Weenie Hut Jr.'s; a place for the weaklings to hang out. Spongebob tries time and time again to get into the Salty Spittoon, he hates the fact that he's considered a weenie. Patrick agrees to let Spongebob beat him up to prove Spongebob is tough enough to get into the Salty Spittoon, Spongebob is let inside and is soon shipped off to the hospital. It turns out that upon entering the Salty Spittoon Spongebob slipped on an ice cube and was knocked unconscious. After telling the doctor about his "boo boos", Spongebob is told that he belongs in the Weenie Hut Jr. Hospital. He just can't win.

Well this is the end of my review, I advise you to at least give this show a chance, you might even grow to love it, I know I have.
