Generally speaking, Nickelodeon produces great kids programming, full of entertainment and educational value. Their Nick Jr. lineup during weekday mornings is amazing, with shows like Blue's Clues, Franklin, Little Bear, and a host of others. The afternoon shows include such goodies as Rugrats, Hey Arnold, and Rocket Power.
So what the heck was Nickelodeon thinking when they added SpongeBob SquarePants to the afternoon line-up?
Set in an underwater locale, SpongeBob and a few underwater friends live their lives and go about their daily business as we watch. In one episode, SpongeBob sets up a "bubble stand" where he sells a chance to make bubbles (remember this is underwater) for a quarter. A neighbor thinks it is a dumb idea, and SpongeBob eventually proves him wrong, showing him how much fun it is to blow bubbles underwater. In the process, SpongeBob uses a lot of physical humor, changing shapes and banging himself around to make the perfect bubble. The point, you ask? I don't know. I didn't figure it out, either, and I have seen this episode twice.
Another episode had SpongeBob trying to protect a recipe. He fought against a being that entered his head and controlled his movements, making him walk like Frankenstein. Of course, SpongeBob emerged victorious. Point? I have no clue.
I know that some cartoons are solely meant for entertainment, but most of Nickelodeon's stuff isn't like that. Nick usually takes a little extra care to make sure that the programming has some redeeming quality, and usually includes a lesson or two (even a small one about sharing or not calling names or ANYTHING positive).
SpongeBob SquarePants has no educational value so far as I can tell. The antics are meant solely to entertain, but often fall short of even that goal. Nickelodeon usually does so much better in picking its line-up. I do hope that they realize the error of this choice, and replace it (soon!) with something more entertaining, educational, and fun. Oh, and a point would be nice, too :-)
