Beautiful crib with small problems.
Written: May 07 '01
Pros:A good looking quality crib with a storage drawer.
Cons:Great climbing potential for toddlers! Some safety issues exist.
The Bottom Line: This is a nice looking crib that doesn't take up too much space in a nursery. There are some safety issues to consider with toddlers in and around the bed.
After a rather exhaustive search for the "perfect" crib, I thought we had found that in the Pali Sabrina. The style is lovely and the wood finish options are nice. We purchased the light wood with the cherry finish accents. I like this option because it mixes well with many kinds of wood.
The bed seemed very sturdy in the showroom, much more so than the traditional Jenny Lind styles and taking up much less room than some super delux and "crib for life" styles. The way that the side raises and lowers without metal mechanisms appealed as well. The drawer underneath was also an attractive feature. Although, with children very close in age we didn't use the feature as a toddler bed, that possibility did make it appealing as well.
We were lucky enough to have the crib given as a gift. After finally getting delivery on the crib, we spent the better part of a day putting the thing together. The instructions aren't entirely clear. My husband and I aren't space cadets - but it took some experimentation getting the thing together. I might rethink a small assembly fee - like $50 - if the store offered it.
We are using the crib on our second child now. The crib itself is terrific. It is sturdy and still looks really good. My son did bite on the top rail but with the light wood, the marks don't show. He did get his leg caught in the crib at night at about 18 months. Nothing panics a mom like hearing a screaming child and finding his thigh caught between the rails. We were always able to get him out but that was one of the reasons we moved him to a big bed early.
The drawer underneath is great in theory but not so great in practice. The side has to be up to access the drawer. The bottom of the drawer will not support heavy objects.
One things we didn't realize until recently is how easy it is for a toddler to climb INTO the bed. The top of the drawer is the first step. The springs are the second. The top of the mattress is the third step and then they are easily in. If that is the toddler's bed, it isn't that big a deal. When it is your infant's bed, it becomes a big deal.
Overall, we are pleased with the crib, but definately not in love with it.
