Leap Year - I enjoyed this movie, but didn't leap for joy over it.

Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Adams and Goode give decent performances, the gorgeous scenery.

Cons:A few scenes that were illogical.

The Bottom Line: It's cute. It made me smile and laugh a few times. But it wasn't great.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

I went in with fairly low expectations - figuring it would be a very typical romantic comedy, predictable to the extreme, where I would guess the outcome 10 minutes in.  In this regard, my expectations were met.  However I have to say I smiled a few more times than I expected I would.  And even laughed a time or two.  Altogether, not a terrible experience for the romantic comedy genre.

I'm talking about Leap Year, starring Amy Adams and Mathew Goode.  Adams plays Anna - a very organized perfectionist, someone who expects everything in her life to line up in perfect order.  So when long-time boyfriend Jeremy (Adam Scott) hands her a little black jewelry box containing earrings instead of the engagement ring Anna was expecting, you can just imagine how this upsets her world.

Not to be off schedule for too long, Anna decides there's only thing to do - Follow Jeremy who has left for a business trip to Dublin.  If Anna can get there in the next few days, she'll be there on February 29th - just in time to honor an old Irish tradition whereby women can propose to men on the leap day.

So Anna heads to Dublin, but one setback after another hinders her trip and leaves her stranded - first in Wales then in England.  Finally, on the last leg or her journey, she meets Declan (Goode) who offers to take her the rest of the way for a fee.  The two set out but - again - one disaster after another hinders their trip.  Finally, after several days traveling together, arguing over nearly everything, the two make their way to Dublin.

That's all I'll say about the plot.

Along the journey we are treated to gorgeous scenery, lovely music, and a few laughs.  I particularly enjoyed the English and Irish "locals" and their various customs and tales.  Most notably the two gentlemen who were quick to spout old wives tales but could never agree on the exact formula of the tale.  These scenes were just adorable.

But I had problems with the movie, too.  The first problem was that I couldn't figure out what Anna sees in Jeremy in the first place.  There is not one ounce of chemistry, romance, or anything remotely resembling love between the two of them.  They paint him in such a cold, unloving light that I felt the entire movie was based on a faulty premise.

Then, after a while, I was supposed to believe there was a chemistry developing between Anna and Declan.  However, that fell flat as well.  She's OK, if a little bit stuffy.  But he's downright rude and arrogant.  I simply didn't buy the "good guy underneath the hard exterior" that was being tossed at me.

And then there's the ending - it was just awful.  For so many reasons.  There's one scene where Jeremy tells a story explaining why he did something. But it's a story that no man (at least no smart man) would ever tell out loud in front of his loved one.  But the story was used as a plot device and nothing more.  Still it made no sense that he would have told it.

But what follows next is even more illogical.  Without giving anything away I will just say that if I had written the script, the ultimate outcome of the movie might have been the same, but I would have taken a different route to get there.

Still, this is a cute movie that won't offend anyone.  No nudity, no bad language, no raunchy jokes.  With decent performances, gorgeous scenery, and a few genuine laughs.  See it, enjoy it, then move on - you won't need to see it again.
