J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings universe finally gets the LEGO treatment. This untapped world is leading to some amazing great sets. Of course in true LEGO fashion, there are many exclusive smaller sets that come and go in a blink of the eye. Astute LEGO fanatics know this to be true, which is why the polybagged sets are the most coveted ones. Delving into the time before The Lord of the Rings, LEGO The Hobbit definitely makes its presence known with the Gandalf at Dol Guldur set.
It’s obvious that Gandalf is going to be one of the most reissued character in this collection. He seems to be all over the place, and rightly so given his stature and importance throughout these tales. This one in particular has him investigating the ruins of Dol Guldur where an evil force resides. To the outside world, this being is known as the Necromancer. In reality, it is really Sauron slowly replenishing his strength after his defeat in the War of the Last Alliance. Gandalf the Grey has his suspicions but isn’t quite certain as of yet.
Gandalf hasn’t changed from any of his previous LEGO appearances. He is outfitted in his grey robe and cape. It’s a simple attire and one that looks more like a vagabond than a distinguished wizard of his stature. His long beard covers most of chest while his pointed hat completes his wizardly look. He holds his trusty walking cane. He also has a map of the Lonely Mountains in his possession. It’s really a nice detailed map that’s easy to understand.
Part of the stone wall from Dol Guldur is featured in this set. There’s a torch with an open flame hanging from the wall. A spear and sword are situated around the wall along with a skull and a spider. A vine grows out of the wall showing that the place has been unattended for quite a while. It’s a simple stone structure but one that has a lot of interest all around.
Each LEGO collection I have seen lately as a small, exclusive polybagged set that usually gets unnoticed until it’s too late. Usually these can be obtained for free at Toys “R” Us either as a free gift with purchase if you buy a certain amount of products for whatever promotion is going on or buying it separately on its own. The bottom line is trying to find it in the first place. These usually sell for $5.00, a bit steep for something this small so it’s wise to try and find a deal if you can.
LEGO The Hobbit: Gandalf at Dol Guldur is best served as a complement to one of the larger sets. On it’s own, it’s not bad at all especially if you are more interested in the character. However, I think it would have been better if Radagast, the other wizard, was included instead of Gandalf just to make this set just a bit more different utilizing another character.
