Lego Star Wars Clone Trooper Battle Pack: New And Improved For 2011

Written: Nov 06 '11 (Updated Nov 06 '11)
  • User Rating: Excellent
  • Durability:
Pros:Four figures, small BARC speeder sled, weapons.
Cons:Only three unique figures, can be grossly overpriced.
The Bottom Line: Just in time for the holidays, this new and improved Star Wars Battle Pack will have any Lego junkie grinning from ear to ear.

It was only a matter of time before Lego started redoing their Battle Pack sets. They really need to use different names for them to avoid product confusion for NLP [non Lego people] especially when a lot of them are going to be purchased for Christmas presents. This is the newer 2011 version of the Clone Trooper Battle Pack; it is a nice bump up from the original but you can't go wrong with either of them. Priced at about ten dollars you are getting a pretty good deal if you are looking for more clones for a scene; the blasters and pulse rifles are a nice perk and with a little customization the BARC / Biker Advanced Recon Commando speeder can look sweet.

ARF Trooper: Advanced Recon Force Trooper. One of the things that I love about these – the helmet. Thank Odin that the designs decided to go all out with these mini figures and not skimp on them or they would have looked horrible. These shouldn't be confused with the Bike Scouts – there are similarities between them but the ARF has a lot more detail to it. There's only one of these in the Clone Trooper Battle Pack so if you need a ton of them you might want to consider buying them independently unless you know people who would want to buy the other mini figures in the pack. This is an extremely clean mini figure done simply in black and white; the legs are blank but there is enough detail on the torso to make up for that.

Clone Trooper: Sandwiched between the ARF and Bomb Trooper is the basic Clone Trooper. Sure, he is expendable but he has some amazing stenciled detail as well as the Clone helmet. Wile it is considered a 'generic' clone mini figure there is a lot of sweet stenciled detail on the torso that carries over in color and form to the legs; the black break between the torso and the leg section doesn't break up the flow of things and the black hand pegs are a nice touch. This is a Clone Trooper so it has a different look than the Troopers from the regular portion of the Star Wars Lego theme. If you are getting this set for a Lego collector you might want to ask them if they are in to either theme or if they prefer the original over the Clone versions.

Bomb Trooper: [Also called Bomb Squad Troopers] The orange color and stenciled detailing make this one of the sweeter Troopers from the Clone series. The amount of black used on it is perfect because it isn't too much but it is enough that it makes the pattern on the torso and the legs stick out from the white undercolor and the orange overcolor. Since there are two of these in the new version of the Clone Trooper Battle Pack you get to use them in a couple different ways within a scene. When you compare these to the 'real world' versions of the Bomb Clone Trooper it's almost a dead ringer. I love the black hand pegs and the shade of orange used on the figure; anything lighter would have come off wimpy and anything darker would have made him look like a pumpkin.

The photo shown there is accurate to a degree. You are seeing the mini figures sold in this set but you are only getting four – not a ton of them as the image may lead you to believe. Likewise you can't see the weapons or the BARC sled that comes with the set so please make sure that you know the exact details of the set before you invest in one or purchase one online. Since this is a 'new and improved' Battle Pack you are going to want to pay attention to the set numbers – this one is 7913, the older one is set 7655. Both packs are nice if you are in to Star Wars but if you are looking for one specific set and you end up with the opposite one, it will suck.
