Lego Battle Packs started out with a lot of Castle themed sets; when the Star Wars ones hit the market people went crazy for them because they were inexpensive and allowed people to get more of the mini figures and characters that they wanted. What started out as plastic packaging has moved on to the standard cardboard box; while this makes it easier to open it doesn’t have the same appeal as being able to view the contents through a clear clamshell case. Even with the packaging changes the basic concept of the Battle Pack remains the same. It is an excellent way to get more mini figures and in the case of this specific set – some cool weapons and a small speeder.
This version of clone is well done; the two shades of blue used on the torso and arms / legs works well with the gray hand pegs, helmet and waist break. Even though the torso stenciling isn't as impressive as the Clone Trooper it is still visible even from a distance. There are four of these in the set; they are all identical pieces so it is a good investment for those who are looking for a ton of these. You can use these for just about any kind of Clone Wars scene but purists are going to have a limited need for them and will only use them in dedicated scenes. The jet packs are a nice touch but they are an optional piece; this gets added between the head peg and the torso piece so it is something that can be added to the figure in a couple of seconds or removed just as easily.
One of the stranger points about the mini figures in the Mandalorian Battle Pack is the facial detail. I always wondered why the designers bothered with adding detail to figures like this since 99% of the time they are going to be posed with their helmets on. When you remove the helmet there are flesh colored head pegs with some rather gruesome facial detailing – creepy and odd are also words that you can use to describe the pegs. If you want to swap these out with other basic pegs so you can use these for other figures you can – to me it seems like a waste to use these twisted face pegs on the Mandalorian Clones because there are so many other uses for them.
Included with the set are some very cool weapons and a small one person speeder. There is a grounded turret and a hand held version in the set; both can be operated by any of the four characters although the hand held version is a little on the large side and could cause the mini figure to tip over if you are using it without a base plate. You can solve this problem by adding some poster putty on the feet of the mini figure then simply pressing it in to place where you want it to be stationed. The speeder is nicely detailed but will only accommodate one mini figure unless you modify it or enlarge it. One of the easiest things to do is to remove the white sloped piece from the back of the mover and you can have one of the mini figures standing on the back of it.
You can get the Mandalorian Battle Pack for about ten dollars at most retail stores that sell other Lego products. Some stores will try to sell it for more but if you scout around you can find it for about ten dollars. It goes without saying that this makes for an excellent gift for those who are in to the Clone Wars but if you are getting this to give as a gift you might want to ask if the Mandalorian clones are going to be something that they will actually want or be able to use. There are other Battle Packs that sell for about the same price that might have more of an appeal to them or might see a lot more replay value.
