Pros:good series starter set, lots of minifigures
Cons:basic set, no special minifigures
The Bottom Line: The Lego City Starter Set is basic, but a good beginner to the Lego City series.
The Lego City Starter Set (60023) is the beginning set for the Lego City series. It contains 272 pieces that includes 5 minifigures.
Lego City
The Lego City series has sets that contain everything that relates to a working city. The starter set has some important elements of a city which include a fire truck, and ambulance and a police motorcycle.
The small white police motorcycle comes with a few police stickers. The policeman minifigure can easily sit atop the cycle. The cycle has a little trouble standing up on its’ own, but don’t worry – it has a small kickstand by the front tire to help it stand up.
The red fire truck can hold one driver in the front. There are several doors located around the truck. The rear side doors open to allow some small gear to be stored inside the truck. The truck comes complete with a 5 inch long fire ladder, which is an unusual piece you won’t often see in a Lego set.
The ambulance is roughly the same size and shape as the fire truck. The large back doors open to allow the stretcher to move easily in and out of the ambulance.
Minifigures
The policeman minifigure has a simple black outfit labeled “police” on the back. He has a white cycle helmet with a tinted visor that can flip up. His smirk is that of displays confidence that he has caught a perpetrator. He has accessories that include a set of handcuffs.
If there’s a cop, there must be a burglar. The burglar is wearing a mask on his mischievous face. He wears a sack on his back for his loot, and a small grey cap to help disguise himself.
There is a young freckle faced boy (identified by his shorter set of minifigure legs) who comes with a skateboard. Any smart skateboarder wears a helmet.
Although the young boy does wear his helmet, accidents can happen, so there is an EMT to drive the ambulance. The EMT is mostly in read and has a medical symbol on his back. He has a stubbled face and wears a blue baseball cap. (My son insists that the EMT has to wear the cap backwards!)
Finally there is the fireman. His fireman’s uniform is an unusual mixture of colors. His body is largely black with an orange and green vest. His fireman’s hat is a maroon. His hat has a visor similar to the police visor.
There are many small accessories that come with this set such as a hatchet for the firefighter and a small gem that sits into the burglars’ sack.
Overall
The pieces that come with the Lego City Starter Set are simple and basic, yet they are a nice start to collecting the Lego City series. Both of the trucks move nicely and have plenty of moveable doors. My son prefers the motorcycle. The minifigures don’t have a lot of special or unique features but on the other hand not many sets of this size come with 5 minifigures.
The Lego City Starter Set is a good set to start growing your city series.
