Pros:Excellent HD performance, top notch “wi-fi” and home network abilities and overall easy to use

Cons:Poor sound quality, rear connection setup needs improvement, non HD (standard definition) performance is average.

The Bottom Line:

For watching HD or using “wi-fi” and home networking features this TV is excellent value.   For mostly non HD material and rarely using “wi-fi” there are likely better options.

Let’s face it….there are far too many manufacturer’s offering way too many different models these days making it very difficult for a consumer who is TV shopping.   First off, be very careful and know exactly what you are looking for.  Be wary as some entry level flat screen tv’s offer performance barely above your conventional tube screen television set.   Others charge large amounts of money for features you may never need, use or want.   An example is “intelligent” flatscreen’s that can “stream” live from the internet.   Some manufacturers will offer a built in wi-fi ant. But charge an additional $ 200-300 for this feature when a lesser priced model can have a wi-fi “dongle (as they are often called) adapter added for less then $ 100.   My comments following will apply exclusively to the LG PZ550.

This TV overall represents very good value – it is 3D ready, is wi-fi ready and can stream Netflix or YouTube or whatever with an added wi-fi dongle for under $ 100.   I paid $ 60 for my adapter.  It has all of the usual inputs and features for flatscreen tv’s up to the $ 1500 range but fortunately can typically be purchased for a very reasonable $ 900 and possibly less in some cases.   For the money this LG is very, very good value and you would have to pay roughly $ 400 more to get an equivalent performing Sony.

Performance ?  There are some things the LG does incredibly well – the HD performance is exceptional and it has very good “blacks” presentation and great colors and contrast.   It is hard to be disappointed with the HD performance.    The regular (non high definition) performance on the other hand is average, so depending on what you watch that could be a factor to be mindful of.   The “Wi-Fi” streaming ability and overall internet home networking features are top notch.   LG has done a very good job in this area and if “Wi-Fi” or home networking are important features for you LG is a winner.   It easily surpasses the performance in this area of my much more expensive Panasonic Viera.

Operation.   The remote is relatively basic but well laid and also offers night lighting which is a nice and somewhat rare feature.   Buttons are all large making them easy to use and all on screen functions are well laid out and easy to follow.   I was able to get my system connected to my home network and up and running without needing to consult the manual.   This is a good thing because the supplied manual is very poor although there is also an included CD/ROM instruction CD and the internet support site.  On the whole it is a relatively easy TV to use although one unusual feature is that it has a power off light but not a power on light.

Dislikes.   Sound quality is adequate at best but on the whole fairly muffled and quite monotone.   Some companies spend a fair amount of time on sound quality (my olderHitachias an example) but clearly LG make little effort in this area.   My other major complaint is the rear hookup area behind the TV.  The whole point of having a beautifully slim chasses is to be able to literally “hang” your TV off the wall like a picture.   Unfortunately LG has configured the inputs so they stick directly out of the back of the TV…on a normal HDMI cable this adds an extra inch and with most brackets means you will need to install the added spacers simply to accommodate your HDMI cable.   Conversely you can purchase one of those 90 degree HDMI cables or adapters but that simply requires you to spend more money needlessly.   On my Hitachi they simply located the HDMI connection on the side of a recessed housing for inputs so your TV can sit flush up against the wall.   This is a minor annoyance overall but does create more hassle for your installation.
