The LG G2X (P999) Smartphone Review

The G2x by LG was the first dual core phone in the USA and it was the first on T-Mobile's network. The G2X promises to offer a great Android experience, but does it live up to the hype? Here is a review of the G2x.

What's under the hood?
The G2x is a beautiful phone to look at, and it honestly feels fantastic in your hand. The soft gel feel of the back case feels great, and offers a great anti-slip feature. The beveled edge is also a very classy touch The phone is about the same thickness as an iPhone 4 and weighs just 5oz.
The LG G2X has a blazing fast 1GHz Dual-Core Tegra 2 processor (the same found in most Android tablets), and 512MB of RAM. On the back there is an 8 megapixel camera which is capable of shooting video in 1080p, and on the front there is a 1.3 megapixel camera which can be used for video chat and self portrait images. The screen is a 4 inch IPS panel which has a resolution of 800x480.
The phone is packing one of the most powerful, and most sophisticated processors in the mobile technology world today. The Nvidia Tegra 2 is a super fast processor that is cable of producing mind blowing 3D graphics, the likes of which have never been seen in a smartphone before, but how does it cope in the real world?
Start off with the good
The G2X has a vanilla version of Android 2.2. Vanilla Android is the basic barebones operating system that Google sends out to phone manufacturers. When companies like LG and HTC receive the software, they are able to modify it in any way that they want.
The beauty of vanilla Android is that it has not been touched at all. The G2X offers the purest Android experience you can get. This means that this phone is probably not suitable for the first time Android buyer. While it is completely customizable, it does have a steep learning curve over the phones offered by HTC with their Sense overlay.
After powering on the phone it was honestly disappointing to see Android 2.2 instead of 2.3. Android version 2.3 has been out for about 8 months now, but having said that, the differences between Froyo and Gingerbread are small, and are mainly cosmetic.
The G2X is super fast. Thanks to the Tegra 2 processor, you will not encounter any lag while using this phone. If you touch the screen, the phone will respond immediately. Touch an icon and the application will open immediately, and scrolling through the screens is a silky smooth affair.
The 8 megapixel camera is really quite excellent, and it has recently been rated as one of the best smartphone cameras ever made. Photos are bright and vivid, and image detail is really impressive. The same can be said for the video that can be shot from the same camera. With the G2X you can shoot video in 1080p (full high definition). There is also an HDMI out so that you can share the pictures and videos you shoot on your HDTV.
The G2x also has some great power management features, so battery life is quite impressive. On a full charge (with juice defender running) and with moderate to heavy use, (including gaming) I could easily get a full day's worth of use from a single charge. It must also be said that call quality is exceptional as well.
Overall the technical specifications of this phone are really very impressive, and right now you are probably thinking that I will tell you to go out and buy this phone, but that unfortunately will not be the case. While the G2X does smoke the competition in terms of how fast it can get things done, it unfortunately suffers with some horrendous design flaws.
Now for the bad
While I really do love my G2X, I absolutely cannot recommend it to anyone else, at least not until LG and T-Mobile offer some major software updates. The phone is plagued with bugs, both from a software standpoint and unfortunately some bad craftsmanship. In fact things got so bad that T-Mobile actually pulled all of the G2X devices out of their stores and sent them back to LG.
There have been many reports of excessive light bleed from the screen. While light bleed is common with IPS screen technology, the amount of light bleed from the G2X is really unacceptable. I can confirm that on my phone light bleed is very bad. You can constantly see white light leaking from behind the display. This can be very annoying, especially when using programs that have dark backgrounds.
There are major software issues too. I am not sure how this phone actually made it to market. All I can say is that quality control must have been very poor. The phone suffers with random rebooting. You can be using the phone and it will be running just fine, then all of a sudden the phone will reboot itself. My G2X was doing this two or three times per day.
Then there are problems with the software drivers for the GPS and Wi-Fi. In fact the issue was so bad I have not been able to use GPS or Wi-Fi in the 2 months that I have owned the phone.
There have also been reported issues with some phones not knowing when the battery is fully charged. This problem has caused many batteries to overcharge and overheat. Thankfully I have never experienced this issue, but it seems it may just be a matter of time.
Unfortunately for this Smartphone the cons definitely outweigh the pros. While the G2X is a powerhouse in the world of mobile devices, I just cannot recommend it. When the G2X is working, it works wonderfully well. It is fast, looks gorgeous, and can complete tasks that most laptop computers can do.
Nonetheless, the problem is that it does not always work the way it is supposed to. Bad software mixed with some bad construction really makes the phone fall short of where it should be. The G2X should have been the Android device everybody wanted, but now it is the Android device everyone wants to get rid of, including T-Mobile.
