A Big Disappointment

Pros:A few good tracks here and there

Cons:James style of singing has changed & he sounds awful.

The Bottom Line: A Good Rock Album, but a poor Metallica album.

What happened?? We waited 5 long years for the next Metallica studio album afer the black album & they give us this? It's not just the music, but James sounds awful. It's as if he's singing lullabies(hope i've got my spelling rite)
Here's a track by track review

Side 1 :

1)Ain't My Bi*ch(5.04)- This is just one of those o.k. tracks that's good in flashes. But the transition in Metallica is clearly evident with this track. U listen to this & u know what u're in for.(6/10)

2)2x4(5.28)- What kinda title is that? Strange, isn't it? Since it was strange, i thought it to be something interesting, but this track was again, just ordinary.(5/10)

3)The House Jack Built(6.39)- The only good thing about this song is a pretty good guitar tune at the start of the lead break. The theme music is good too. But the chorus is poor.
And to top it all, it's over 6 minutes long!!!(4/10)

4)Until It Sleeps(4.30)- Excellent. This is the closest Metallica have got to their old selves again. An excellent chorus & a kinda eerie atmosphere is created. The title is a bit eerie too. (9/10)

5)King Nothing(5.28)- It would've been better if this song was titled "Nothing", coz it's almost what is there in this song. The intro promises something good, but it breaks into a very ordinary stanza with James trying to sound brutal. The chorus sounds like some one's mugged up something for his exams & is just telling it out in a hurry.(4/10)

6)Hero Of The Day(4.22)- A milder, slower Metallica track, but it can in no way be compared to the classic "Nothing Else Matters". I hated the video though. I think Hetfield made himself look like a fool in it. Coming back to the track, it's pretty o.k.(6/10)

7)Bleeding Me(8.18)- Again a slower track that gets a little heavy towards the end. It's got it's catchy moments & a good lead break too. Flashes of the old Metallica can be heard on this particular track. A good track to end an otherwise disappointing first half of the album.(7/10)

Side 2

1)Cure(4.54) - This track would've been a good one if it wasn't for Hetfield saying "I do beleive" countless times. Hell, the song even ends with an "I do beleive". A pretty attractive line is present though in this one - "Everyone's got to have the sickness, coz everyone seems to need the cure".(5/10)

2)Poor Twisted Me(4.00)- Well, sounds to me that Hetfield was probably having constipation & was in the toilet trying to force it(u know what "it" means) out while singing this number. That's how he sounds on this one. Anyway, he does a good job of it. This one actually is a good track.(7/10)

3)Wasting My Hate(3.57)- Ugh! How could they even come out with such a track. It sounds like a punk metal track. Hmm..."I won't waste my hate on you, think i'll keep it for myself". What is that suppose to mean. Doesn't make any sense to me. U also have Hetfield shouting "HURT" in between which seems totally out of place & i found it damn irritating too. Metallica's worst track ever.(0/10)

4)Mama Said(5.20)- A mild number once again. Many metal heads may not like this one. A touch of blues in it. I liked this track a lot , one of the stand out tracks of the album.(8/10)

5)Thorn Within(5.52)- This is one of the slower tracks, but not soft, almost grunge like with a good catchy chorus. But these guys can actually do better.(7/10)

6)Ronnie(5.17)- A commercial sounding track. It's actually an enjoyable one.(7/10)

7)The Outlaw Torn(9.49)- A pretty long track. It's good in flashes. But it also got a bad chorus though that actually spoils the song, something like "see me, hear me, feel me" & God knows what. The lead break though is awesome.(6/10)

Final Comments: Metallica had got a lot of criticism for this album, but for every fan they lost, they gained another 10. That's because most of the people can relate to this kind of a tuned down metal music. It's not exactly metal, it's mostly hard rock with a touch of metal here and there. That such an album had to come from a band of Metallica's calibre would definitely disappoint most metal heads, me included. Nevertheless, I would still recommend this album as it's not that bad.
