Our overwater bungalow on Bora Bora (in French Polynesia) likewise had a "water closet" so I'd agree that it's not too unusual for French accommodations.

Being an expert in bathroom/toilet science, I'd just thought I'd warn you that many bathrooms in Europe do have this configuration. This is an old design, so if you stay in a more modern hotel you'll get your usual all-inclusive bathroom. I also found that unusual when I first moved to Europe...
