Pros:Amazing beds, Next to the beach
Cons:Not on the beach
The Bottom Line: It is definitely worth a stop. Close to all of Santa Monica, and the bed is reason enough to eschew other local choices.
Two years ago we were staying at the Century Plaza and needed to stay in town an extra night. However, they were booked up. Deciding a change of scenery would be nice any way (and more than willing to be rid of the over-hyped and uncomfortable Heavenly Bed just rolled out by Starwood), we asked our travel agent to find a place near the beach. She came back with Le Merigot, of which neither of us had heard. Turns out they had just opened.
It may have been that they were still in the opening phase and, as such, on their best behavior, but we found them very gracious and welcoming. Almost to a fault. I felt like saying, "It's fine, really everything is just great."
Our room was relatively spacious but had a view of the city, not the ocean. I suppose we could have asked for a change of room, but we just wanted to decompress after both having long work days. The decor of the room was kind of typical luxury hotel fair, nothing extraordinary. It had lots of light woods, fabrics and leather.
The bathroom was quite nice with all the extras one would expect from a hotel such as Le Merigot. I have to admit, I like it when a place has a small glass container of cotton balls and q-tips. The toiletries were quite nice as well. The bathroom had lots of marble but not overwhelmingly so, and there was a separate room for the toilet (a feature I really like).
The best thing about the experience was the bed. It was truly wonderful. Per the front desk, it consists of 400 thread count Frette linens, a feather bed and down comforter. I don't actually remember much after lying my head on the pillow. Someday, I would love to have my bed at home feel that decadent. I had a very hard time prying myself from it in the morning.
Unfortunately I had to fly out that following morning and was unable to take advantage of the other resources and perks, such as the spa and restaurants. My partner stayed one more night for work and continued to get great service.
I would definitely go back, just to see how it is now that it has had time to settle into a normal rhythm of business and, of course, to sleep in that truly heavenly bed again.
