| timmount's Full Review: Marriott Coronado Island |
Coronado Island
This famous island sitting off the coast of downtown San Diego is about 5 square miles of early California homes, trendy businesses and upscale restaurants.
In the early 60's the islanders realized they had a great
thing going and subsequently passed stingent zoning laws to protect the charm of their picturesque little island. Initially the only transportation to the island was via ferry but now there is a toll bridge that takes you out to the island. They have maintained a "water taxi" ferry that takes people from downtown San Diego out to the island.
Hotel
I went to a meeting in San Diego that I thought was going to be at the Del Coronado but turned out being at the Marriott Coronado. Fortunately I was not disappointed in the hotel which is upscale and elegant in its simplicity.
The hotel is two story with most of the rooms looking out over the bay to downtown San Diego. The room was one of the most pleasing in which I have stayed. Although it was one big room the square footage was more in line with a suite.
You walk into a small foyer with a divide before you encounter a king sized bed, large sitting area with couch and coffee table, table and chairs, and large wall of sliding glass doors to the spacious balcony overlooking the pool, bay, and finally giving you an expansive view of downtown San Diego. The rooms are built at a slant to the shore line so that almost all the rooms have a generous view of the water.Access to the room was easily accomplished from one of several elevators.
Restaurant
There are several restaurants in the hotel and I enjoyed eating at their main restaurant featuring California cuisine. The prices were high but not exorbitant and the menu was varied. Service at the restaurant was top notch. You would eat inside or out depending on your temperament.
Location
The Marriott is situated on the east side of the island directly across from Downtown. The taxi's were abundant to take you any place on the island and fares were reasonable. Several trendy shopping centers were within walking distance of the hotel. Tourists and natives alike were seen strolling the wide streets of Coronado Island, day and night
Summary
The Marriott on Coronado Island gives you a wonderful base of operation to see the island or all of San Diego. Rooms are superb in size, furnishings, and layout. Parking was ample. When we left I only dimly remembered my disappointment at not staying at "The Del"
