Pros:Close to Sea World, relaxing atmosphere, adjacent to Mission Bay and its great bike trail
Cons:Excessive daily parking fee, rude staff
The Bottom Line: I would not stay there again because of the excessive parking fee.
The check in, at 4:00 p.m., is later than most of the hotels Ive stayed in. However, check out is noon, which is nice. Also, if you ask, check out can usually be extended. I was told my check out could be at 1 p.m.
Costs to keep in mind. The hotel does not offer complimentary transportation to and from the airport. It costs approximately $20.00-$25.00 to take a taxi. I was told by the concierge that the yellow taxies are the most expensive. So if you want to save a few dollars, I would recommend choosing a different taxi company. I paid $22.00. There are plenty to choose from, just waiting at the airport. If you do decide to rent a car, beware that there is a mandatory $22.00 per day vehicle charge at the hotel. There appeared to be plenty of parking available so I thought this charge was extremely excessive. Transportation becomes a big expense at this hotel because it is not in walking distance to many shops or restaurants. Therefore, you are either paying $22.00 per day to keep a vehicle there or you are dishing out a lot of money in taxi fares. We only stayed one night and ended up paying close to $50.00 in tax fares between just getting there from the airport and then being dropped of at the cruise ship terminal (near the Maritime Museum) the next day.
I thought the staff was quite rude. For example, I gave the gentleman who showed me my room and dropped off my luggage upon arrival a $2.00 tip. He took the money, looked at it and then dropped it off on the nightstand and said, just keep it. Then he turned around and left.
The hotel website discusses all the great activities you can do on Mission Bay, right outside the premises. What they fail to tell you is how expensive it is to rent everything. There is a really nice trail that circles Mission Bay and there are bikes to rent if you choose to pay the price. They also have jet skis and 4-wheelers for rent. I saw a lot of dogs being walked on the bike path next to the hotel. However, the hotel itself has a no pet policy.
The hotel also has two really nice tennis courts, which of course they charge you to rent racquets and reserve the courts. A huge piece of advice would be to go onto Hilton.com and sign up for their Hilton Honors Program prior to your departure. It is free to sign up but the savings are substantial. For example, there is a very nice spa and fitness center on the property. I believe the charge was around $15.00 per day to use the fitness center. However, if you are a Hilton Honors member, the charge is waived.
We wanted to order pizza from room service but the pizza oven was not working, so I cant comment on the room service itself.
The room furnishings were modern looking and the bed was very comfortable (if you like a soft mattress). Over all, it was nice for one evening, but I would not want to spend any extended time there. The main reason being simply the expense of keeping a vehicle parked there or having to take a taxi every time you want to actually get anywhere.
