| jo.com's Full Review: Garden Gate Bed And Breakfast |
We found this wonderful Bed and Breakfast, Garden Gate Bed and Breakfast in Frommers Hawaii from $80 A Day. It is listed as a find and it is a find!
Location:
Garden Gate is located at 67 Kaniau Road in Lahaina. It is on a quiet residential street and looking at it from the front there is no clue as to the charm that lies in the back.
The phone number is 800-939-3217.
The website is: www.gardengatebb.com. (I typed in the website and it said it couldn't be found. I then typed Garden Gate Bed and Breakfast in my browser and it was there so don't give up.)
It is only a 5-minute drive to a beach area. Ill say more about area beaches in a moment.
It is 45-minute drive from Kahului airport and 10 minutes from west Maui airport. It is 3 minutes to old Lahaina town and Kaanapali, one block from the ocean and 2 blocks to the beach. It is owned by hosts Jaimie and Bill Mosley.
About the Bed and Breakfast:
Guests do not go into the Mosleys own home. We entered by a side gate and are greeted with a beautiful garden area. We walked over a short bridge with a stream running under it which the Mosleys had made. All around are the gorgeous flowers I only saw on Maui, pineapple and banana trees and of course the geckos. Dont be afraid of these little, tiny lizards. They are harmless and actually very cute.
The Mosleys built a wing-like building that has 4 units. Each unit opens to a little different feeling. For example, our unit was up a few stairs and opening the door (leaving our shoes outside) there were about 4 rooms in that wing. Each room was a little different (We peaked into a couple.) and had different names and prices.
On both the upstairs and downstairs floors there are other separate entrances which house deluxe suites with refrigerators, microwaves, decks and a separate pull out sofa for children. Looking around for our room the first night we got there we passed by one of the suites and it was very nice. It made our tiny room look even smaller!
The room:
Our room really was small but we spent very little time in it and for $89 as long as it was clean, I was happy. It had a wicker dresser and night table, a mini-refrigerator in the closet, which had a mirror on it, a shower, hairdryer and regular soap in a pump dispenser. The shower had a soap and shampoo dispenser, which was nice, though. It reminded me of my gym! This was the no-frills way to go. The name of our room was the Ginger room.
If you want to stay here and you dont want the smallest room, you dont want this room, but we enjoyed it and, if you read other reviews, you know we were on a budget. We had a queen-sized bed and the television was up high like you would find in a hospital. Actually this was an efficient way to get a TV in this room. The Mosleys had paperbacks in the drawers. The air conditioning worked well but we did have a bit of a problem closing the curtains. Luckily nothing was next to our window except thick bushes.
Our room and the entire facility was really clean. The mini refrigerator was spotless. It was obvious that the Bed and Breakfast is kept in very good condition.
There were many sitting areas around the grounds including outside the door to our wing. On the table on this deck were magazines, a radio and CDs, which we needed for our trip on the Road to Hana. Everything was available to borrow. Truly almost everything!
There was no housekeeping except to take out our trash. I do believe this may have been the only Bed and Breakfast I have been to where there was no housekeeping. That is true of all the rooms.
Available also are small rooms with twin beds and the other rooms I mentioned that were larger are called the Garden Studio and the Lania Room. A couple on their honeymoon was in one of these suites.
Breakfast:
Breakfast was nothing to write home about and if you are looking for a Bed and Breakfast where you will be served homemade omelets and Belgium waffles you are coming to the wrong place. The outside table (It so rarely rains that breakfast is always outside.) is set up with fresh pastries which Bill Mosley picks up each morning and fresh fruit mango and papaya! There are also juices, tea and coffee. We served ourselves. I was very happy with the breakfast. I wouldnt have wanted or needed more but that is something to keep in mind.
Breakfast is a great time to talk to the other people who are staying at the Bed and Breakfast. You can find out where they have been and where not to go, for example. Bill, of course, is a wealth of information and will tell you everything you need to know and more!
Breakfast is served from 8:30am to 10:00am every morning except Sunday.
Where is the closest beach?
There are certainly many beaches in Maui and we visited a lot but if you are not really a beach lover a 3-minute walk will take you to Wahikula Wayside Park. Or you can walk another 10 minutes to Lahaina Harbor or 20 minutes to the beautiful beaches of Kaanapali. Garden Gate is an 11-minute walk to a black sand-swimming beach, which is 300 yards long.
Other information:
-Parking: There is plenty of parking in the front of the house. We never came home at night and couldnt find a spot to park.
-The Mosley's prefer a minimum stay of 3 nights but they are flexible.
-Check in is at 2:00pm and check out is at 11:00am and they can be flexible about this also.
-In an area downstairs there was a washing machine and dryer to use for free and they even had detergent.
-There is a large refrigerator in this same area. Off of this area is a large room with just about anything you many need including insect spray!
-There are bikes and boogie boards. Every day we borrowed chairs and mats and this is all at no charge. We also borrowed coolers. There is a barbecue for use. VCRs are available on request.
-Smoking is not allowed in the rooms but you can smoke on the deck or in the garden area.
In summary:
There are many areas in which to stay. We loved being in Lahaina. There was a lot to do and we were never bored. Even my husband, who hates to shop, found himself walking the strip at night it is just a very pretty area. We enjoyed Garden Gate very much and if you dont mind the lack of housekeeping and the continental breakfast rather than a gourmet one, you may want to look into staying here. The most expensive suite is $125 a night. There is no pool and there are no amenities. What you do get is personal attention and if you want help making reservations for a special dinner or Luua you will get it. As I said, this is a no-frills Bed and Breakfast.
