Pros:Apartment like rooms, nice pool, great for children.
Cons:Ugly beach, non-existent staff
The Bottom Line: A great place to take the kids and kick back for a while.
In the never ending search for parents with small children to find a vacation worth getting everyone on a plane for, there is Paradise Point in San Diego.
One aspect I always look for when traveling with my children is the ease of the transition into a hotel room. Paradise Point offers garden apartments. The rooms are fairly nice one bedroom suites with pull out sofas in the living area. They also offer a full kitchen, not the cleanest area of the room but handy with children.
The hotel/resort is very nice. The grounds are well kept and the landscaping is typical tropical. There is also a large tower centrally located that you can walk up and look at the view. Although the real beaches of San Diego are located across the street, the hotel does offer a small beach which I found kind of dirty and not really kept up. Also its almost like a rental in the respect that the staff is scarce.
Activities include a 18 hole putting course, bicycle rental which includes these cart-like family bikes that seat 4 (my kids thought they were cool) and cheap sailboat rental which me and my wife took advantage of and cruised around a bay for an hour. There are about a dozen pools and the main one is quite nice, heated zero depth with sand and a tropical theme. Near the main pool is a spa and health club, where I got a hot stone massage unequaled to this day, I recommend it. Also close by is Sea World, Lego Land which is lame and a whole review unto itself, the San Diego Zoo which is great, and Balboa Park. Nightlife in the Gaslight district can also be fun.
There are two restaurants located on the grounds one is more upscale and the food is good it also has outdoor seating and the view is nice. The other is more of a bar type atmosphere but also serves food and is on the water, surrounded by pools with interesting fish.
Overall I would say this place is very comfortable for families to stay in, and centrally located enough to experience all that San Diego has to offer.
