| iamchinagirl's Full Review: Hotel Griffon |
I've been staying at the Hotel Griffon for 5 consecutive years on New Years Eve night. My friends and I rent a big room and walk to the New Years Eve bash, less than 1 block away! The street the hotel is on is always closed off to non-guests so it's amazingly quiet despite the gigantic party going on in the nearby streets. Every year for New Years Eve, they have a big celebration down by the Embarcadero near the Clock Tower. I've looked into many other hotels in that area, but the Hotel Griffon always ends up being our choice. First of all, they don't force you to buy a "New Years Party Ticket" for their hotel's party. The Hyatt across the street does and it's extremely expensive(over $100/ea in addition to cost of room) they also watch you like a hawk and make sure you only have 2 people in your room. If your friends are seen at the Hyatt, you will be kicked out of your room! The Hotel Griffon has a beautiful lobby/bar/restaurant area. When I first walk in, I get a pleasant greeting from everyone who see's me. They call me Ms. Rivera which is really odd since I'm only 26...people usually call me honey. It's nice to get some respect! The rooms are always perfect and the bathrooms have large tubs w/ separate shower. Each room has an outdoor patio area...which is good for smokers since all the rooms are a firm non-smoking. The elevator up to the rooms is very small, but it's neat because it gives you a classic old hotel feeling, even though the whole place is newly and beautifully decorated. The elevator opens at both ends, so don't lean on the back wall when you get in! The staff was young and hip, but very professional. I was worried that we would be kicked out because I had a couple more people staying in my room that they allow. Both people at the front desk told me it was ok and asked if we needed extra blankets or pillows! The Hyatt would have kicked us out on the spot. The Hotel Griffon is prettier than the Hyatt and feels more upper class. The Hyatt is always booked on New Years, which I don't understand. They are so strict, it gets annoying. Parking at the Hotel Griffon was free for my car (since my card paid for the room) and then about $20 per car after that. The price for our room was around $350, but split between 6 people, was not bad. Each room has a King bed the couches fold out into a queen size bed. They have a small bar and a lock box, a desk and a stereo with CD player/radio. Perfect! We all brought in CD's from our car! It's perfect and in 5 years, they have never let me down.
