One of the better affordable Union Sq. hotels

Written: Aug 12 '02 (Updated Aug 14 '02)
Pros:Good location, Nice and cozy rooms, Small details shown, evening wine reception, free breakfast
Cons:The shower is a bit too harsh, no air conditioning for the one hot day!
The Bottom Line: If you are looking for a budget hotel surrounding some of the highest priced hotels in San Fran, that combines style and quality, stay at the Inn at Union Square

Although we only stayed at the Inn at Union Square for 2 days, it was much much better than our stay at another hotel just a few doors down, the Andrews Hotel, which we stayed in for 3 days. Everyone in the lobby was great with directions and helpful information. In fact, we had a very early flight on the day of check out,and that morning we called and they had everything ready to go as we were leaving. Checking in was also very simple and they treated us as if they were expecting us.
The room was bigger than the Andrews hotel room, although it is smaller than hotels I have stayed at in the past. We were on the 5th floor and our room had a king bed, 2 chairs with table and lamp, and a TV and armoire. The bathroom was adequate, I felt that the shower was too harsh in that the water was pounding on your head. And the shower is so small that you can't escape the pounding anywhere else in the shower! I would rather have too much water pressure than too little though. There is no A/C, common in San Fran, but there was a little window fan. However we were there during a 2 day heat wave, and the window fan provided little relief. Little details were very nice, robes and slippers, mints, umbrellas if needed. Also it was quieter here than at the Andrews(this may be due to the difference in staying on the 5th floor versus the 2nd though!) Breakfast was also much better, there was plenty of food and it was of better quality (at the other hotel all the bananas were bruised and the oranges were moldy). They offer bagels and pastries, and cereal. The wine reception was nice, it occurs daily, although everyone on our floor was packed into the tiny lobby on our floor, not giving room for everyone. Along with the wine they have hors d'oeuvres, although we did not have any. I think it was meats and cheese. All in all, I would definitely stay at this hotel again next time I visit San Fran.
