| titaniumtommy's Full Review: The Inn At Union Square |
I surprised my wife with a weekend getaway to San Francisco to see Mamma Mia and go shopping. The concierge at my workplace arranged the whole weekend for me and it was perfect!
The hotel is very tiny and you wouldn't even know the hotel was there if you were walking by. There is just a little door that leads into a small hallway. It's definitely cozy. There's an interesting "book shelf" wallpaper that makes you feel like you have just stepped into someone's home. The service was very cordial and helped us check in very quickly. They also whisked my car to the parking lot as valet parking is the only option (at $23/day, it's about average price). The room was at the end of a long skinny hallway. They even lined the hallway with mirrors to make it feel larger which kinda helped, but not that much. The room was cozy with a nice sized bed dressed in great sheets. There was even a little recessed bookcase by the door that was perfect for holding wallets, keys, etc. The desk had a high speed internet connection that worked effortlessly with my laptop. Around the corner, was an elongated part of the room with an armoire and TV at the other end. Sitting from the bed, you'd be hard-pressed to discern what's happening on the TV screen that was placed so far away, but who's there to watch TV? The bathroom was clean and servicable, nothing fancy.
My wife and I put our stuff down and changed to go walk around the city. The hotel is literally next door to the Disney store and the cable car station. Actually, it's much better to get on the cable car from the hotel's stop rather than the beginning of the line (where all the tourists are). At the beginning of the line, the wait is very long (sometimes hours) and they're always people soliciting you for money. From where we were, we got on the first cable car without any problems...no hassles, no wait! Union Square (recently remodelled) was right across the street. We caught a Korean festival happening that weekend.
When we got back to the hotel to get ready for dinner, we found two complementary bottles of water and a bottle of chilled white wine had been delivered to the room. When I called the front desk they said it was free! Neato!
There's also a free daily breakfast service with cereals and breads along with an afternoon tea/wine service with snacks served in the sitting room on each floor. We tried it on both days we stayed there and it was pretty good stuff...bottled water, colas, cheeses, fruit, crackers, etc. All free! Normally, in other hotels, we would have had to pay $2 for each bottled water, but not at the Inn!
Upon checking out two days later after a great weekend of fine food and a great performance of Mamma Mia, I was totally surprised. When I went downstairs to pay, I was presented with my parking bill, which I signed. Then I asked about the room bill and they said it was free! I was totally shocked, but it was true. Apparently, the concierge at my work got my wife and I a free room for two nights! Dumbfounded, we promptly left before they had realized their error, but there was none, the clerk assured me.
What a great hotel! I'm sure the next time I go back I'll have to pay, but I won't have any qualms about it because of the great service and all of the freebies.
