I live in Tampa, Florida and one of the perks to living here is that we can drive 1 hour and be a tourist in Orlando. I have stayed at just about every Luxury and Disney resort in this Orlando area, being an Orlando native and a Florida resident. I had not stayed at the Marriott World Center until last weekend. We decided to go over for one of our weekend getaways and try this resort. We were prepared to spend some cash as it was vacation weekend for us but we do like to get what we pay for to some degree. It is very impressive on the outside with it's size and grounds.
BUT- Our room was just like a nice, basic Days Inn style at triple the price (nothing special) and we had paid for the view which was great but I could have seen it from the cooridor in the hotel halls for free. Had we used our balcony full time for our 3 days maybe then I could have seen the price being so high but not for what we had paid (Not even a Disney area view). 2 beds that were doubles and not queens which I had been quoted a price for and front desk told me I had in my room but surprise when we got in the room!! Called front desk and there was no other room for us. Plan on paying for extras that are free elsewhere or at the hotels that have fees atleast most give you what your paying for. Tons of construction sites everywhere (no workers just barricades and detours that are long-cuts, even on a Monday and Tuesday. WHERE ARE THE WORKERS??) shows you where your money NEEDS to go.
We ordered room service breakfast in bed and I ordered the "Crunchy French Toast" which was soggy and cold and for 12.99 did not come with anything else not even bacon or garnish. We also got the Creme Brulee Oatmeal which was tasty but for 7.99, it was a bowl of oatmeal with custard and bananas and strawberries. Room Service lunch was not much better and very pricey. I have stayed at many hotels and ordered room service (some good, some bad) and this was just terrible. We went to the restaurant for lunch and a BLT with hard waffle fries for 10.99. Hmmmmmm?? Childrens portions seemed bigger than the double priced adults. For dinner we went to the Japanese Restaurant which they do the cook in front of you thing. We go to our neighborhood restaurant like this often and would not go back to the Mariott's version ever. For such prices, I could get 2 plates of better quality food at my home town version. Skip This Restaurant and check out the fine restaurants in the area off property for the money!!! Lake Buena Vista has some great ones as does International Drive.
The Pool area was nice but crowded for a off holiday/off season time of year and they served cocktails for $6.99, pina colada, to your Lounge chair. Was a good drink but small cup. There was a Reggae Band who played in the pool area which was nice and tropical feeling but after almost $21.00 and 3 small drinks, I felt a bit ripped and I must have been paying for the band at those drink prices. But wait, I had ALSO paid $10 a night mandatory resort recreation fee when I checked in to even sit by the pool, so shouldn't the band be included in this fee and my room amount not in the drink prices? So, plan on paying to sit by a crowded pool with that mandatory fee. And that's if they put out enough chairs for you to get one. People put a towel on chairs they want to reserve hours in advance in the morning, or husbands come down and put towels on chairs to mark off their area as the wives are still up in the room getting ready or getting kids ready. So, you have all these chairs everywhere with towels on them and don't know who's is who's. Not cool!!
There is valet parking for ANOTHER fee or a LONG walk in the hot Florida sun or rain to the parking garage or wait on a shuttle we never seemed to find even though we stood where we were told to wait on it. It never came.
Called maid service and asked for extra pillow and towels at 6pm. 4 hours later we fell asleep and never got any of it.
Starbucks type coffee place in lobby is expensive but quickest way to coffee fix. Conciere concentrates on selling dinner shows and tickets not service or true recommendations for your group. More of sales desk than info or help.
High priced hotel trying to pull off a trick on you. The service doesn't match the price. Nor does the construction areas and rough spots the rates do not reflect ( if the hotel is under loud construction all over, why not give discounts for the inconvenience??). If you can get it for $50-70 a night then go for it but to pay anymore is fooling yourself into a hotel that doesn't put out for the money. Big hotel is not better I have learned. You are the one who keeps putting out money, even after you check in. FEES, FEES, FEES.... EXTRAS, EXTRAS, EXTRAS.
The Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress is down the street (over the interstate closer to Disney) and for about the same price you will be treated like royalty, eat wonderful food for the same price and is a very elegant, luxury, beautiful Resort inside and out. Thats where we stayed on the next trip and really felt like we were on vacation instead of nickel and dimed the whole trip.
I do not recommend this hotel on service, food quality nor price!! If you want to spend ALOT of money on a hotel that you can get the same amenities and room, service for half the price elsewhere, then spend your money here. This is a beautiful hotel from the highway, but I say keep on driving for the price to get better service and luxury.
