| unterspan's Full Review: The Georgian Terrace Hotel |
The Georgian Terrace is a white behemoth wedding cake of a building that offers some of the largest and most luxurious rooms in Atlanta. Located directly across from the Fox Theater it's location can't be better if you are visiting for one of the historical theatre's extravaganza.
We have stayed at the GT three times and each time had one of the corner suites. These suites consist of an interior sitting room with small kitchen area, an enormous circular bedroom on the turreted corner of the building and a very very generous bathroom. The rooms are decorated in soft pale neutrals , the ceilings are high with crown molding and you imagine that this circular room might have housed an embassador or hot politician in a former time. The roominess of the suite lets people really have a sense of privacy; one can entertain a little, and one person can get up at dawn while the other sleeps till 9. The only down side to sleeping til 9 is that the room is flooded with the most heavenly light because the only window covering are mini blinds. But when it's night and those mini blinds are up you get a wonderful vista of the Atlanta skyline that clearly tells you why Atlanta is the capital of the new south.
Stuck right between the booming midtown and bustling downtown, The Georgian Terrace let you get to the north or south ends of the city --- either by car (there is underground parking for a fee - don't even THINK about parking on the street) or you can walk one block west to Atlanta's high speed transit. It's not the greatest neighborhood for strolling after dark, so unless you like beggars and drunks asking you for money, you're going to want public transportation. Unless of course you are going to the Fox. During intermissions I have run across the street to the Georgian Terrace rather than wait on the endless restroom lines that exist at the Fox. I was able to get back well before intermission ended and still got to see the mad scene from Lucia de Lammermoor from my seat.
There aren't a lot of classy places to eat within walking distance from the Fox, so again transportation becomes a problem, but a lot of cabs hang out near the Fox, so you might be lucky enough to hail a cab.
The staff at The Georgian Terrace is the epitomy of Southern Hospitality. While international by name, they have all been tutored in southern graciousness and do everything they can to make your stay comfy, be it more ice, thicker towels or another pillow for your weary head.
I must confess that I am not too familiar with the perks such as a health club or pool. There is one but I never stepped foot in it. I was too busy flying off to Buckhead for dinner a great french bistro in Lenox Mall and then off Phipps Plaza for my favorite lingerie store.
The Georgian terrace does have a delightful little cafe/bar on the mezzanine with a friendly and colorful barkeeper who looks like he might have his own stories to tell. Try a Maker's Mark, a small batch Bourbon that can't be matched, and relax in some of the white covered lounge chairs that occupy the hallways and sitting areas at the Georgian Terrace.
Breakfast is included in the room price and you will enjoy the sunny morning room the hotel uses for breakfast guests. Again you are in a circular room with expansive window walls and you can order a la carte or from the breakfast buffet. Don't miss the cheese grits, they are heavenly and a visit to the south isn't complete without tasting how good something so awful sounding can be.
The price is right -- $150. for the suite. The location great for theatre goers and the atmosphere posh and laid back at the same time.
