Pros: Laid-Back. Beautiful beach. Best sunsets in Hawaii.
Cons: Resort grounds are not as beautiful as the Hyatt, Princeville or Kauai Marriot.
The Bottom Line: If you plan on exploring the island and spending a limited amount of time at the resort, this place is ideal.

| rmra1's Full Review: Sheraton Kauai Resort |
My wife and I stayed here in May of 2003. This was our second trip to Kauai. Last year we stayed at the Kauai Marriot. The Sheraton's grounds don't jump out at you like the Marriot's. The Marriot is a tropical paradise with elaborate artwork, architecture, Koi ponds, etc. The Sheraton is much more modest. That being said, I enjoyed the Sheraton more. It was more laid-back and had less pretentious a crowd than the Marriot. It had an open feel to it (unlike the closed off, exclusive feel of the Marriot). And most importantly, the beach on which the Sheraton is located kicks the Marriot's in the butt. Poipu is the heart of the south shore, and if you came to Kauai for its beaches, the Sheraton is on one of the island's best. Before booking your lodging, ask yourself this basic question: Am I going to Kauai to relax on a resort, or am I going to explore the island? If you choose the former, then you should stay someplace with more impressive grounds (try the Hyatt next door). Or you can get a room in the ocean wing of the Sheraton (you are literally a few steps from the ocean). If you plan to do what my wife an I did, which was essentially traveling around the island all day and returning to the hotel at sunset (with the exception of one or two beach days in between), then the Sheraton is superb.
The hotel is spread out. You don't get that closed in feel you get at a lot of resorts. The beach is wonderful. It is long and allows you to take lengthy walks. The sand is clean and smooth. The best sunsets on the island are on Poipu. My wife and I stayed in the Garden Wing, but we got a partial ocean-view room. The view wasn't great (you had to look across a parking lot and a street in order to see the ocean). If you want to see the ocean, you should stay in the Ocean wing. The room itself was fairly standard. It was clean and had everything you need. It's nothing to write home about, but if you are coming back from a long day's hike in the Waimea Canyon, the room is quite comfy. Basically, there was nothing to write home about, but there was also nothing to complain about really.
There is a resort fee. My wife and I were a bit annoyed at first (another 20 bucks a day), but once we saw what it covered we were no longer complaining. It covers breakfast. Once you see the breakfast buffet, and sit down to eat at a table looking right onto the ocean with (with the morning breeze blowing in), you realize you got your money's worth. The resort fee alone is recouped by the breakfast. You also get internet access (so you can email all your friends back home and tell them what a great time you are having). The fee also covers parking. and the daily Mai Tai hour. Overall, the fee is nothing to complain about, given what it pays for. The Sheraton is a great place to stay if you aren't looking to stay put on your resort. If you have any questions, drop me an email at rmra2@hotmail.com. Just put "Kauai" in the regarding line so that I know it's not a spam message.
