This past spring, I had the opportunity to attend an educational conference in Chicago at the Hyatt. As my school was footing the bill, I got two roommates from another school so they just had to pay for the expenses and not the hotel. When I made the reservation, I told them that there would be 3 people staying so we would need a room with 2 double beds and a rollaway. We figured 3 grown women did not need to sleep together.
We took the shuttle from the airport, so it was really easy to get there. When we pulled up, we were greeted by the belle boy, and he graciously helped us with our bags. We went to check in, and were promptly checked in. That was when we were informed that it was a fire hazard to have a rollaway, so they would not be able to accommodate us. After much arguing, we finally took the room. One of the people staying with me talked to the concierge. She said that it would be no problem and got us a rollaway. So, we relaxed and starting having a great time. To make a long story short, our bed disappeared the following night with no warning. I cannot give this hotel a good recommendation due to the way they handled their customer service. We should not have been told we could have a rollaway, get one for a night, and then have it disappear with no warning or explanation. Now that I have gotten that out of my system, I will try to review the rest of the hotel.
Cost
The cost that my school paid was $175 a night, which was the conference rate. For the room we received and the service, it was not worth that much. Beware also that you will be charged $1.50 for any phone call, even to an 800 number. One person used their calling card twice, and were thus charged $3.00 for phone calls.
Room
The room was rather small, but we were able to still move around even with a rollaway. It had a table and chair over by the sliding glass door. It also had the customary dresser and night stand. The was a place to hang up items, along with a few minimal hangers. Right inside the door was the bathroom. The bathroom was kept well stocked, and I loved how strong and warm the shower was.
Maid Service
The beds were made daily, and they made sure we had clean towels every day. Although there were only 3 of each, which was only enough for 1 for each of us. One person wanted to wrap their hair, but couldn't. The night we had the roll-away, the quickly brought it up with pillows and blankets.
Food and Drinks
They had at least 3 restaurants in the hotel. We only went to one of them. That particular had good food, but was a little on the expensive side. Their menu had a variety of things, their fruit plate is to die for. They also had a nice restaurant and a buffet. The buffet was a little too expensive for our taste. I would recommend not buying pop or water from them. $2.50 for a can or a small bottle of water. There was no refrigerator in our room though, so we could not buy any and keep it cold.
Concierge
The concierge was very helpful. Besides helping us with the bed, she also helped us find a restaurant one night to eat at. She also had maps and directions printed up on how to get to certain places, such as the museums. Every detail down to exactly which bus/train to catch.
Meeting Rooms
I found the meeting rooms quite satisfactory. The were cool, but not too cold. The sound was superb. They were easy to find, and there were maps printed out that showed where each room was located. I'm not sure if that was the hotel or the conference, but it was an added bonus.
Checking Out
Now I am getting to the bad part again. When we checked out, we found out that there was another man's name from Ohio who was actually the person on that room. They had the correct credit card information, so they said that would be no problem. We did not need to worry about it. One month later, my principal had to call the hotel to question them on why there were 2 charges. One charge for the 4 nights we stayed, plus an extra $150 charge. What finally came out, was that they charged me for the room we stayed in supposedly under someone else's name plus a no-show charge for the room that was reserved in my name. They did reverse the no-show charge, when they finally analyzed it. But this again shows their bad customer service.
I would not recommend this hotel at all. Given the room size, and their customer service, it is not worth what you pay for it.
