About Me: Not everything that can be counted counts, not everything that counts can be counted.

Rich man's Motel 6

Written: Oct 01 '01
Pros:Can walk to Michigan Ave, Rush St.
Cons:Only one off-site bar/restaurant that's not a hike.
The Bottom Line: OK if you need to stay downtown, and basic amenities will suffice. Luxury/Vacationers can do a LOT better.

I stayed at this hotel for three nights last week, the government rate was $130 per night. I have stayed here several times in the past and have noticed minimal changes in decor/service.

This is definitely set up for the business traveler who doesn't need a data port, Nintedo game or a phone in the bathroom. Essentially you get a clean room with basic amenities...downtown. I strongly urge vacationers looking to relax to try somewhere else, like the Embassy Suites (now two downtown locations). There is no pool, sauna, nor whirlpool...unless you pay to use the health club in the adjacent Illinois Center.

There are several restaurants and bars in the hotel, which serve decent food, but take your credit card. Fortunately, most major cards are accepted. The morning breakfast bar has a good assortment of food, fruit, meats, cereals, french toast etc. for about $15-$20 with tax & tip.

The BIG Bar & Brassiere (sp?)is a cool spot. It claims to be the longest standup bar in North America. You can order drinks and appetizers here. Again, take your Visa card, one Captain Morgan & Coke is $8, plus tax & tip.

Valet parking costs $33 / night, so if you drove into town, don't forget to factor this into your budget.

The staff have always been friendly during my stays.

It's about a five minute walk to Michigan Ave. On a nice day, it's possible to shop the length of the Magnificent Mile, however, during the winter only the brave (insane) would try it. For you conventioners, cab rides to McCormick Place are about $8 one way.

Bottom line, a decent place to stay if you're doing business downtown; but not a place to get away from it all.
