| mixmaster67's Full Review: Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers |
Let me preface this review by saying that in general I try to stay away from large hotels that cater to conventioneers or large groups. I have this fear of being lost in the crowd, waiting for service, etc. I tend to prefer the service you get from smaller hotels. With that said on to the review...
The Hotel itself: Clean, modern, beautifully designed and appointed. I believe it has 4 restaurants, 2 bars. Its large (over 1200 rooms) but because it encompasses a large area you don't feel overcrowded. The room itself was better sized than many chain type hotel rooms. There was a separate sitting area with a sofa and a coffee table well away from the bed and desk. Lots of elevators, including an express bank for the higher floors (so my fear of waiting for the elevator never materialized) The only minus (and it is a small one) is that the bed wasn't as plush as I would have liked, and the bathroom was adequate sized, but also a bit smaller than I would have liked.
The Location: Just off of Michigan Ave, right next to the river, within a 15 minute walk to the Loop, the Navy Pier, etc. This has got to be a big plus for this hotel. If you're there on business, you don't have to sacrifice convenience for the rather unpleasant surroundings of the Loop business district. After your meetings you can be surrounded by Michigan Ave. The hotel sits right at the river edge so if you are lucky (like I was) your room will have a great view of the river and Lake Michigan.
The Service: The doorman and bellmen were polite, helpful, and prompt. Our luggage was tagged, secured, and promptly brought to our room (no lugging through the lobby required). The frontdesk people were polite and professional and check-in was quick and painless. The staff all made eye contact with you and greeted you as you passed them. One bad thing was the terrible service at the Sportsbar. The waitress never came around to see if we wanted anything else after dropping off our first round of drinks and I waited over 35 minutes for Chicken Wings - and when I finally got them they were cold - I suspect our waitress forgot to check on them and pick them up since she seemed pre-occupied talking with the bartender. Other than that big blemish, the service was excellent for such a large hotel.
