A Solid Choice in Downtown Chicago

Written: Nov 07 '02
Pros:Near Everything, Attractive Rooms, Lovely Bathrooms, Friendly Staff
Cons:Weird Computer System, Toilets Need Help,
The Bottom Line: At $125 or less per night I would definitely stay here again. Despite a few minor quibbles the Hotel is great. A higher rate would give me pause.

Recently I had the pleasure of staying at the Westin River North in downtown Chicago. First of all, let me confess that I got a spectacular last-minute rate of $79/night. Had the rate been more in the $125-150 range my value equation might be very different for this property, particularly given the density of hotels in this area.

Okay, on to the hotel. The location is excellent. Formerly the Hotel Nikko, the Westin River North is right on the Chicago River with an "El" station nearby (Mart), and two more within easy walking distance. Numerous restaurants, shops, etc. are also located nearby.

The minimalist decor of the lobby reflects its heritage as a Nikko in a previous life, and the staff is very polished, professional, and courteous. The computer system is odd though, as it only allows one guest to be assigned (or looked up rather) in the system. We experienced this frustration firsthand and it may be of concern to business travelers sharing a room.

The rooms themselves are very nicely appointed and spacious in comparison to most Chicago hotel rooms. Two minor complaints though: the toilet is rather low both in stature and in flush (again, a throwback to the Nikko days), and we found that the retrofit "Heavenly" beds weren't up to typical Westin standards.
