Great hotel, but make sure you get your $$$'s worth

Written: Apr 08 '01 (Updated Apr 08 '01)
Pros:Pretty hotel, great back bay location
Cons:Somewhat dated, small rooms
The Bottom Line: Great location, all the usual Four Season luxuries, but small rooms and higher-than-usual prices. Try to get a deal here- with view room on upper floor.

If you're trying to find a great hotel in Boston, the Four Seasons is nice, but you can find better deals... the hotel is overpriced (so is Boston, for that matter), and sort of tired.

I've stayed at the Four Seasons Boston twice, once for business and once for vacation. It's a very nice hotel, with all the trappings you'd expect from a Four Seasons- great bathrooms, comfortable beds, nice sheets, etc. But you have to be careful when you're booking your rooms...

Because the building is somewhat older (which adds to its charm, but detracts from room size and modern features) it's built around a courtyard. So, unless you ask for an upper floor facing the front, you get a boring view. The rooms aren't very large, so request the largest in your category. And, if available, ask if you can get a free/cheap upgrade.

On the plus side, Boston is a GREAT city, and this hotel is in the perfect spot for theaters, restaurants and shopping. It's right on Boylston, near everything. Because Boston is pretty small, you can walk almost anywhere, and this hotel is centrally located. Also- great fitness facility, which is hard to find in Boston.

Overall, I'd stay here again, but Boston is one of the few Four Seasons hotels where I'd encourage people to explore other hotels for cheaper alternatives. The Westin is sort of a zoo, but the rooms are bigger, and there are a lot of nice small hotels in the same area with more charm and less expense.

So: Get a room on an upper floor, ask for a view, ask to be upgraded if possible, and see if they are running any weekend promotions with reduced rates. If you can get a good price, it's a great hotel. If you're paying $400 or above, it's not worth it.
