| floridawannabe's Full Review: Algonquin Hotel (The) |
We stayed at the Algonquin hotel in NYC the first weekend of December 2004. Never having been to NYC it was hard to decide which hotel would suit our needs. This hotel perfectly met our needs. The outside is beautiful, with a canopy with lighted Algonquin lettered scriptly, two small pine trees flank the entrance way. The hotel sits in Midtown theater district on the west side. The hotel is located at 59 W. 44th Street, it sits between 5th and 6th street. Which are major intersections for NYC.
We were greeted by a friendly doorman who quickly got our luggage from our taxi. Then we went inside and the front desk was very friendly and fast in our check in. Asking for each guests name, making everyone feel welcome.
The hotel lobby is dark and warm. Lots of low sitting chairs and tables, and dark Mahogany panel, leather chairs and dark fabric upholstery. There was a small Christmass tree with white lights in the lobby. The "lobby" is broken into three sections. The main section, the Oak Room, where writers from the New Yorker would sit and mingle in the early years, Dorothy Parker, etc. The second room is a bar area, and then the above mentioned lobby area. The lobby area gets full during happy hours with many people who seem to be enjoying themselves. The hotel has a resident cat name Matilda who roams freely.
The hotel corridores are all wallpapered with old cartoons from the New Yorker. If you didn't look closely you could maybe fool yourself it was toile. The hallways are narrow, and there are stairwells, with beautiful metal iron work.
The hotel room we had was the standard one with twin beds. The room is nicely lit with white walls. The window area had a bench and looked like a picture window. Our view was nothing great, another building. The window had nice levered blinds, and a beautiful window dressing of burgendy and yellow. The twin beds were very comfortable, in fact if you like the bedding and beds so much you can purchase a set for your home. They were very soft. The beds themselves had nice quality of sheets, with a chennelle throw and a down comforter, and two down pillows. These beds were a welcome refuge after shopping and walking all day in NYC.
The room itself is small, probably no bigger than an average bedroom (10 x 12) there was an armoire with a tv and cable, the bathroom was tiny but well accomadated with toiltries, lotions, etc. There was a hairdryer provided, ironing board, robes, and a nice size closet to store your stuff, along with a safe. The staff was very friendly and helpful, the concierge was informative and the check out was hasselfree.
The location of the hotel is nice, you are close to Times Square, the theaters, subways, etc. Next store is a good diner too. I would recommend this hotel to friends and family for it's location, style, and friendly staff.
