Pros:Location, decor
Cons:Expensive, noisy, rude staff
The Bottom Line: I would not recommend this Inn. The price was way too high for the service rendered.
The Inn at Irving Place began life as three brownstones in 1834 on the corner of 17th and Irving Place. The corner brownstone was later torn down to make a small apartment building. The remaining two brownstones are what make up The Inn at Irving Place today.
The location of The Inn at Irving Place cannot be beat. You can walk to almost anything that you would want to visit; great restaurants, the Village, and uptown. You are truly in the heart of New York City.
The Inn and rooms are decorated in gorgeous, elegant antiques. I was very happy with the decor and the very plush towels in the bathroom. Unfortunately, that is where my happiness with this Inn ended.
In the basement of this Inn there is a bar that has an outdoor patio and it can be rather noisy. The noise drifts up to the rooms and it remains noisy until the bar closes. Do not expect to get an early night's sleep at this Inn. Not only does the noise hamper sleep, but it also does not set the mood for a cozy, romantic evening.
If noise were the only negative factor I could probably overlook it. However, the staff was not very people orientated. I am sure that they have had so many complaints about the noise that they are tired of hearing about it, but they need to realize that it is a new problem to their guests. This is not the only instance of rudeness from the staff. They had booked a luncheon on one of the afternoons we were there and they wanted to get set up for it. We were still finishing our breakfast at this time and we were rudely rushed along. Granted, the breakfast was free, but I feel that we more than paid for it in the high nightly rate. I think that they should have an area set aside for there nightly guests to enjoy a leisurely breakfast.
Overall, I would not recommend this Inn to anyone. Unless you want to pay over $500 a night for a room where you can't sleep to get a free breakfast you can't eat then you are better off staying at a Holiday Inn.
