Just recently stay there on May 21-24. I had read the reviews prior to my stay and I have to say that the three reviews that I read were very accurate. Upon check in (about 3pm) we were assigned a room. My wife and I are not smokers but we were given a smoking room. Also, there were two double beds. I am over 6ft tall so a double bed is very uncomfortable. (I made and paid for the room six months prior and requested a non smoking king room).
I immediately contacted the front desk and asked why I was not given a non smoking king. I was told that there was a large group that had taken up a block of rooms and that a king non smoking would be available the next day. So, I accepted this (what choice do I have) and took the king non smoking the next two days.
As far as service is concerned, the staff was courteous and friendly. However, no more than I can get from a moderately priced hotel, i.e., Courtyard. The Helmsley's approach to customer service is not above and beyond what's basically expected.
As far as the room decor is concerned, it's early '80s late '70ish-ugly. The bath tub had some mold. In general, the Helmsley needs a facelift a complete renovation.
