Wonderful place for a quiet and relaxing getaway

Written: Nov 19 '04
Pros:clean, quiet, relaxing, wonderful location, wide variety of services, large rooms, perfect vacation spot
Cons:Can be a bit pricey, I found the best rates by going to
The Bottom Line: If you are looking for a romantic getaway where you can stay at a quiet and relaxing environment, this is the place for you.

I stumbled upon the Sanderling last year while trying to find a place for a nice romantic getaway with my significant other. I was looking for something that was elegant, quiet and near the water. I was skeptical about picking a random place off the internet, because I have had bad experiences in the past where pictures can be quite deceptive. When I arrived at the Sanderling all my worries were quickly alleviated. It was everything that the literature described it to be and more. The rooms were large, clean and fully stocked with everything you would expect from a quality hotel.

The Sanderling is located on a narrow portion of the outer banks. They have rooms on both the sound side and the ocean side. The area where the hotel is located is also away from other hotels so the only people you see are people that are staying there. This makes for a very quiet and relaxing stay, void of all the tacky, tourist type things at most beach resorts.

I stayed on the ocean side, because I couldn't afford a second level room with an ocean view. I had a dune view, but the dune view is not nearly as bad as it sounds. If you can't afford the higher level rooms, don't fret. Go for the dune view; you will definitely enjoy yourself.

The Sanderling is about a 10-15 minute drive from any stores or restaurants, so you will want to stock up on things and bring them to the hotel. Don't worry about having to bring beach chairs and umbrellas though, because they provide them for you.

There is a tea/coffee time mid-afternoon each day which is quite nice. They serve a couple types of teas and coffees, as well as light pastries. There are 3 restaurants on premises for those that don't want to make anything in there rooms or drive to a restaurant.

The only negative thing I can say is that it can be a bit expensive. I did however find that I could get lower rates going through www.visitob.com. If you book it directly through the Sanderling you are going to pay more money. I have booked 2 reservations through visitob and have been very satisfied.
