A Nice Place to Rest

Written: Sep 18 '07
Pros:Low price; cleanliness; decent food; Bingo!; no coin slots
Cons:Small casino; no coin slots
The Bottom Line: If you prefer casual to luxurious, in both accommodations and cuisine, this is the place for you. It's a worthwhile bargain.

I've stayed at the Gold Coast several times. Lots of folks complain about the bathrooms being tiny but there's sufficient space to do what you have to do, even if you're on the wide side. There's a full sized soaking tub with shower (and a window!) and a commode. Outside of the closure is your sink and closet. The rest of the room is quite roomy and nicely appointed. Big window with a variety of views (not all pretty), a table and chairs, choice of bed(s) and a nice-sized flat-screen TV over the dresser and high speed data links for your laptop computer. You also have a ironing board and iron, blow-dryer and coffee machine. Ice and vending machines are on every floor.

The casino is small and there is a limited choice of slot machines. All of their slot machines are ticket-in-ticket-out (no coins). Some like that arrangement and others don't. In a casino this size where you're likely to move between different denominations of machines for variety, it's a blessing.

If you like the old-fashioned 3-line slots, you'll be disappointed. They are only a few banks of them. If, however, you're attracted to the multi-line slots and/or video poker, you should find enough to keep you busy.

I don't play table games, so can't tell you much about them. During the week, they look kind of slow, but on the weekends, they're quite busy. There's a racing book also.

They also have Bingo! I believe the only other place on or near the strip with Bingo was The New Frontier and they're closed now. Palace Station may have it, but that hotel is more isolated than The Gold Coast. The only other bingo games are downtown.

I decided to stay here when I took my mom to Vegas and we've been back several times. She's in her 70's and I couldn't imagine her having to walk the distances common between the hotel and the casino in most Vegas resorts multiple times a day, nor wait in long lines for the buffet, etc.

The food is quite adequate comfort food - nothing really special, but the prices reflect that fact. The 24-hour coffee shop offerings are actually quite good and they supply the room service. Their graveyard specials are wonderful!

You're right next door to the Rio and The Palms. There's a walkway to the Rio - not sure about to The Palms. It's a $10 cab ride to the strip. All in all, if you're looking for a decent place to stay that has most of the amenities, this hotel should serve you well. If however, you're looking to pamper yourself in luxurious surroundings and experience all the glitz and glamor Vegas can offer, you probably want to look elsewhere for accommodations.

I'm not a big gambler - I'm a slot player - but I prefer to put my money in the slots, not in the room. My hotel room is for rest and refresh and little else. As long as it is fresh and clean, I'm satisfied.
