| megugrrrl's Full Review: Gold Coast Hotel & Casino |
(Apologies if his epinion sounds familiar, but I'm just re-posting my review from memory of the Gold Coast because it mysteriously got deleted.)
I am a big fan of Las Vegas and gambling and have had the chance to stay at practically every type of hotel in Las Vegas from decadent mega-casinos on the strip to rinky-dink motels with just one, lonely slot machine in the pseude lobby. My first stay at the Gold Coast was for an event (the Las Vegas Shakedown) this past August and I wouldn't mind staying at the Gold Coast again.
Staff
Since they're usually a person's first encounter with a hotel, they can make or break one's impression of a place. The staff at the Gold Coast was super efficient and friendly, without being overly perky. I remember there being half a dozen people in line waiting to check in and the front desk staff got through them pretty quickly and were able to answer questions people had appropriately. Something noteworthy was how the staff (front desk, cocktail servers, security people) treated attendees of the Shakedown. (The Shakedown is basically a punk rock music fest.) Dozens of people with dyed hair and tattoos roaming about the casino didn't seem to change the attitudes of the Gold Coast staff.
Rooms
We received a weekend rate of $59 a night and our room provided the essentials; big comfy bed, bathroom with toiletries, cable TV -- the typical hotel room outfit. The decor in the room was a little dated but not offensive... I remember there being a lot of brown. Our room was clean and quiet. No complaints.
Food
While I would recommend the Gold Coast as a whole, I would definitely urge you to look somewhere else for food. We went to the buffet (aptly named 'The Buffet') and while it was relatively cheap, the food tasted like cafeteria food: the chicken tasted like the beef. I ended up eating a lot of salad and filling myself up with the cookies, both of which were decent. The free cocktails they give you at the buffet aren't that great either -- for breakfast you get your choice of a Bloody Mary or a Bloody Mary (it's a good thing I like them) and for lunch/dinner you get a watermelon/vodka slushie that tastes worse than Kool Aid. I wouldn't really stress out too much about the food though because the Gold Coast is right next to the Rio Hotel which has the best seafood buffet in town.
Gambling
There's so many conflicting opinions on gambling in certain hotels that I'm not even going to touch this one except to tell you that I lost $500 on the slots and my husband won $500 on the tables.
Finally...
While the Gold Coast offers everything you would expect a Las Vegas casino to offer, it lacks one thing that the mega-casinos have... that Disneyland feel. This could be either good or bad, depending on where you're coming from... I personally found it refreshing to be away from the campy themes and crowds for a weekend.
One last thing, the Gold Coast is far from the Las Vegas strip -- don't expect to go casino-hopping unless you're going to take a cab...
