| one_listen's Full Review: Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino |
The Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas provides very nice accommodations for a stay in Las Vegas. The Rio advertises as an All-suite hotel; however, that is a slight stretch of the definition. The standard suite is an oversized hotel room with a couch and coffee table. The room was very comfortable but not quite a suite. I was very surprised that the room did not feature a large flat screen television as this has become standard in most hotels. The room did have both a mini-bar (very expensive) and a separate small fridge (great for storing ֱ-11 purchased beverages). The outer wall of the room is made entirely of glass providing an excellent panoramic view of your surroundings, so make sure to request a Strip view.
The Rio offers numerous shops and restaurants as well as the Carnival World Buffet. Priced at $24 per person for dinner, the buffet offers endless choices and is definitely worth the price. As with most buffets, make sure to leave room for dessert so you can choose from literally hundreds of options (more pies than Ive ever seen in one place). They do offer a champagne brunch on weekends, but I opted for the heavily recommended Mandalay Bay brunch instead, which was outstanding! The fresh fruit alone made this an excellent choice.
For the gambler, the casino is fairly large and covers most of the first floor. The drink service is quite quick, and there is a mardi-gras style show with decorated floats that takes place right above the casino floor. The Rio also plays host to Penn and Teller with nightly shows. At close to $100 per ticket, it is a little pricey, but the show lasted almost 2 hours and provides a very entertaining combination of comedy and magic.
The biggest downfall for the Rio is location, about one mile from the strip, and on a multi-lane road crossing the highway - this is not a walker friendly mile. For many hotels, a rental car is not necessary when visiting Las Vegas, but I would highly recommend one while staying at the Rio. There is a free shuttle service that runs to Harrahs (next to Paris on the strip) but I often saw people in line and never did actually see the shuttle.
I have recently discovered another great fact about the Rio, their Casino marketing department works overtime to lure people to their off strip property. I must admit that I left some $$ in their casion, but I certainly donated more of my hard earned cash in other establishments, yet in the few months since my trip I have received numerous offers for free stays and even $100 cash.
