Cream of the crop

Written: Dec 20 '99
Pros:Stunning decor, fantastic food, the best dealers in the business
Cons:Not cheap, casino discounts not easy to come by

What can I say? Bellagio is simply the best. I've stayed there twice now and have walked away impressed in every respect except for one: they didn't have a non-smoking room for me upon arrival. Since that was shortly after they opened, however, the room didn't smell terribly bad.

By no standard is Bellagio cheap. The rack rate for rooms is something like $450 a day, and you can easily spend $100 per person in most of the hotel's restaurants for dinner ($200 if you splurge on wine). The gaming tables cater to the higher-end consumer as well; you won't, for instance, find any $5 blackjack tables except in the wee hours of the night and morning. Also, it's considerably more difficult to rack up bonus points here; you won't get a comped room or meals unless you're betting some major bucks over some major periods of time.

Tip: their Le Cirque restaurant might be alluring based on name alone, but Picasso -- which is named that because of all the Picassos they have on the walls (no, I'm not kidding) -- is just as good, costs less money, and doesn't require a jacket-and-tie getup for admission. Also, if you don't want to wait in line for the daily breakfast at their main dining room (and it can be a 20-30 minute wait), head up to the front of the line and tell them you just want to sit at the counter. (This only works if you have 1-3 people in your party.)
