Great Hotel even for Non-Trekkies!

Written: Apr 25 '00
Pros:Nice Rooms, Value, Star Trek Ride
Cons:Long Checkin, Small Casino, Location

Sure the star attraction is the Star Trek ride. And I think it is a great ride. But I keep coming back for great deals on the rooms.

This hotel is not in walking distance of anything but the convention center. It is a short drive to the strip or downtown though. The Riveira is across the street and sahara is close by as well.

During the off season this is a great place to stay because you can get rates as low as $29 per night even on a Friday night! I have not paid more than $49 per night to stay here during the winter months. Spring the prices do shoot up to $130-$300 a night.

The rooms in the North Tower are the best. They all have marble desks, are huge and have a funky zigzag cutout wall. The bathrooms are very well lit with large oval oversized tubs. This is the only hotel I have stayed in that gives you mouthwash! So you can be minty fresh as you sleep on the most comfortable beds in all of Vegas! The rooms are super quiet too and if you are like me, the rush of the A/C actually helps me sleep and in most tower type hotels it is a very weak fan in the a/c. Here it is like a wind tunnell! It cools off the room super quick.

Each room has a tinted bay window with drapes controlled by electronic switch. The views are either of the strip or the golf course in back of the hotel or the convention center. I prefer the higher floors and have never stayed below the 24th.

The central tower rooms are a little older looking and some are odd shaped. They are mostly the same but the bathrooms have a normal tub with sink and mirror in a seperate area. Gone is the funky zigzag wall.

Check in can be a long long wait during peak hours. The staff is friendly but there are never enough agents. Note that they no longer accept Debit Cards at all even if they have the MC/VISA logo on them. On my last visit they refused my card for this reason and I had to give them a credit card. They said it was a change in Hilton policy.

The Space Quest casino is usually dead. I keep wondering when they are going to either remove this casino or make the machines payout better. No one gambles here except to try out the "break the light bar" slots. Rumor is the machines are jacked up for minimum payout but the novelty is not getting people to play there Hilton wake up!

Quark's bar is usually busy although I have never had to wait there to get a table. The food is good but nothing super special. The prices are high.

The Buffet is small and expensive but the quality of the food is very good so I will usually go there when staying at the hotel. I would not make a special trip for it though.

The casino is not as large as you would think for a hotel this size. I think this is still in the top 10 largest hotels in the world. It has about 30 table games all in one area and a number of quarter and dollar slots. There are a few nickel slots in one corner and they pay out surprisingly well! I always play these after the buffet and so far always have recouped the price of the buffet $10-$20 per session.

Heading down to the sports book is a pig-sty or piggy bank. Section of all piggy slots. Cute. Then there is mostly video poker all the way back until the sports book.

The parking structure is quite a walk so if you have a car it is best to Valet here. Or get a room in the north tower so you can take the single outside glass elevator that will bring you to the north exit close to the garage.

All in all this place is a great value on the off season if you can get a good rate. Outside of the Star Trek area the hotel has no "Theme" outside of just "Nice Hotel" and it is a very nice, classy hotel. Try to book through their own website which will usually yield a discount lower than most internet travel agents.

Live long and Gamble at the LV-Hilton!
