The Experience - Fun

Written: Jan 06 '00
Pros:The experience is realistic and fun
Cons:Took more time than expected

Since I didn't actually stay at the Las Vegas Hilton, I can't speak for the rooms and the hotel service. This review will focus on the Star Trek Experience and the casino.

The Hilton is not on the strip, and it's not close enough to much for walking. We walked from the Riviera, and afterward, we walked to the Stardust, but if you're staying at the Hilton you will probably want to rent a car or take cabs.

The casinos were clean and spacious. The space theme casino was a bit cheesy but had some really cool laser effects. The main casino was really ritzy and glamorous. They had a lot of everything and lots of table games with high minimums. Needless to say, I didn't do much gambling there.

The Star Trek experience is made up of two parts. The first part is a museum and the second part is "the experience." Definitely allow a couple hours to do them both. I wasn't prepared for the amount of time that you need in order to take the whole thing in.

I've watched Star Trek forever, and while I'm not a rabid fan, I enjoy the show and know the characters. My companion had not watched the show and didn't know much about the characters. We both enjoyed the Star Trek Experience though.

The museum is filled with stuff from the shows and movies. One of the most interesting things is a timeline along one side showing the whole "history" that the shows have created. If you were a real trekkie you could spend hours and hours reading all this. The casual observer will likely spend about one hour.

The second part is the experience itself. I don't want to give too much away, since some of it will surprise you. It's lots of fun and you do get the feeling of "being there." A motion ride is part of it, which is pretty good (probably not as high quality as some of the ones in Disney world).

After the experience, you may want to eat at Quark's bar (based on the Deep Space Nine show). We ate lunch there. The food was good. The service could have been a bit better (they never brought water refills and were a bit slow occasionally) and the prices, while steep, were not outrageous. After standing in line for the buffet for 1/2 an hour and realizing there was probably another 1/2 hour wait we were thrilled to find immediate seating at Quarks.
