Review Topic: Accommodations
Recently, I had to travel to Las Vegas for a trade show to be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. I traveled out on Tuesday, and stayed at the Las Vegas Hilton until late Friday night.
This hotel is enormous. There is no other word for it. It is split into three sections, each with its own set of elevators, and the hotel grounds include at least five "sit-down" eating establishments, three "fast food" eateries, several gift shops, and the sprawling casino. The Hilton is not on the famous "Strip" and is not within handy walking distance of much of anything. Most cab fares were in the $10 range, whether we were headed downtown, to the Strip, or to the airport (closer to $12).
Room and rates: Because I was there for a convention, I got a discount on my room at the LV Hilton. Despite that, the room ran around $140 per night.
It was not a spectacular room by any stretch. We were in the oldest section, the central "tower." The bathtub dripped constantly, and the stopper on the sink was broken so that I had to pull it out with my fingernails to let the water drain.
The television was relatively small, but we didn't watch it, so it wasn't particularly important. The air conditioning was loud, and blew gale force winds around the room (whether you consider this a plus or a minus is up to you!).
Housekeeping was quick and efficient; aside from her tendency to put the stopper back in the sink, I had no complaints.
And we had a view! Usually, I end up with views of the parking lot, but this was definitely a view of the Strip. Yay!
Restaurants and pricing: We went to three of the restaurants on the premises: The Paradise Cafe, Benihana, and The Buffet.
The Paradise Cafe: The food here was excellent. I had a barbecued pork sandwich twice the size of my head. My husband had chicken parmesan and an amazing banana split. The service was outstanding--friendly and swift. In addition to the waiter, the busboy kept our glasses filled and engaged in friendly chatter. The surroundings weren't exactly memorable, but they were clean. Prices at the Cafe seemed a bit high; we spent around $45 for lunch.
Benihana: I love Japanese cooking, so this was a real treat. The food was excellent, and prepared directly at our table. I had the "Geisha"--chicken and salmon. Fantastic. Prices were high, but in line with other Japanese restaurants I have seen. $30-40 per person.
The Buffet: We hit the buffet for breakfast one morning. The food was average, the service excellent, and the prices moderate. We spent about $20.
Other restaurants on the premises included a Japanese cafe, an Italian restaurant, a "pub" style restaurant in the Star Trek area, and a steakhouse.
There was also a tiny Pizza Hut offering personal pan pizzas, a sub shop that looked so tempting but that I never managed to go to, and a TCBY.
Casino: I'm not much of a gambler, but my husband entertained himself with the nickel video poker for hours. The casino was clean and well-lighted, with plenty of attendants to fix any problems. For a lark, we joined their "frequent gambler" program (they didn't call it that), and racked up almost thirty points. I think a hundred points earns you $10, so we don't qualify as high rollers.
Service: The service throughout the hotel was fabulous. The people were friendly and well-spoken, and seemed genuinely happy to help. Even the hotel operators. I kept commenting to everyone around me how pleasant the employees were, from front desk, to bellhops, to luggage check, to doormen.
Through the kindness of my employer's heart, I was able to take my husband along. It may have been a mistake. He's hooked on Vegas, now. If we were to return as tourists, we probably would not stay at the Las Vegas Hilton because of the expense (we also were both taken by the downtown, and would probably rather stay at the Golden Nugget). But the hotel is like a self-contained city, with friendly people, excellent service, and all the amenities. If you're like most visitors to Vegas, you won't spend much time in your room, so any flaws there are easily overlooked.
