The Luxor Does Not Equal Luxurious

Written: Mar 01 '01 (Updated Mar 01 '03)
Pros:Good location, interesting theme, upscale ambiance.
Cons:Overpriced for what you get.
The Bottom Line: I was disappointed with the Luxor and wouldn't recommend it. There are much nicer hotels on and off the strip for a bit more or a bit less money.

We stayed at the Luxor hotel for 5 nights in February, 2001. Based on an Egyptian theme it is really a unique hotel but it can't compare to many others in Las Vegas! As soon as you get near it you see a bright blue beam of light coming from the middle of it going straight up into the night sky which is an interesting site to see.

There are 4400 rooms in the Luxor from deluxe rooms to suites with Jacuzzis. We had a deluxe room which was nice but not spectacular. There were 2 queen sized beds and still plenty of room for tables, chairs, etc. Decorated in the Egyptian theme it was pretty but again not super special. The room had a hairdryer, iron and board but no refrigerator bar which is my standard for luxury. It was the first time I had seen a separate hair conditioner. Usually hotel rooms have shampoo and conditioner in one. This is a small item, but I did take note of it. There is no bathtub. Instead you have a supersized shower with a brick wall which was in keeping with the theme.

We stayed at MGM last year whose rooms I would say were comparable to ours. We did get a chance to see the rooms at the Venetian where our friends were staying. All the rooms there are suites with 2 televisions, a step-down living room and refrigerator bar. That was luxurious for not much more than we paid.

Our room was clean, though, and housekeeping services were very good. People were friendly but when you have a hotel of that size you don’t get a lot of personal attention but you don’t go to the Luxor for personal attention! Of course if you want personal attention you can go to their spa, Oasis, which is the only 24-hour a day spa. You’ll find 12,000 square feet of fitness equipment and other services including aromatherapy. The cost is $20 a day even if you are staying there and other than the fitness equipment all other services are extra.

We had the dinner buffet at the Luxor and I would not run back for it. It worked out well for us and if you arrive late and are tired, for $12.95 you will get good food and all you can eat. Some of the buffets in Las Vegas are worth the extra money with all you can eat crablegs, shrimp and in one case lobster! The buffet breakfast at the Luxur would have been excellent at $8.50 if we hadn’t eaten at the Mirage the morning before. There for $8.95 you will get lox (smoked salmon) and whitefish – very unusual and expensive foods to be served at a buffet.

Because the Luxor is shaped like a pyramid all the walls are angled and all the rooms are on the outside of the hotel. Rather than an elevator they have what is called an inclinator which goes up and down at a 39 degree angle to accommodate the angle of the hotel.

There are about a dozen restaurants in the Luxor. Just to point out a couple..one is the Isis which was named as one of the top 10 gourmet restaurants in the U.S. by the “Best of the Best Restaurant Guide.” You will also find the Pyramid café for a casual sitdown meal which is open 24 hours a day and a food court.

Nefertiti’s Lounge will give you live entertainment where you can dance, listen and drink in the midst of the casino.

Blue Man Group which plays in NY, Chicago and Boston plays at the Luxor theater. It is always sold out so get tickets early. I saw them in Boston and it is a super show to see.

The Luxor has 4 outdoor pools and 4 jacuzzis. There is also one specifically designated for families. In February one of the pools was open and heated to 80 degrees.

The Casino is top shelf with $100 slot machines! You can get cashrewards and merchandise if you sign up for the free membership card. We tend not to gamble in the fancier hotels but if you gamble $25 in their slot machines you will get a $25 voucher for an airplane ticket with the membership card.

The hotel offers gaming lessons on a regularly scheduled basis which is probably fun if you are interested in learning table games.

In summary, The Luxor was a very nice hotel but for the money I would opt for the Venetian or Paris if I could get a good deal there which you can do if you keep checking. Also depending on the time of the year rates do change. To be specific about our rates we paid $69 for 2 of the nights, $79 for one of them, $119 for one, and $169 for Saturday night. That averages out to $102 per night. Our friends stayed at the much more luxurious Venetian for an average of $129 a night.

I am rating the Luxor 3 stars because for Las Vegas it is just average, in my opinion. The Luxor elsewhere might be seen differently in my eyes.
