I visit Las Vegas once a year for business and, in my experience, the Monte Carlo is one of the best choices on the Strip. If you're looking for a more subdued way to enjoy all that Vegas has to offer, this is it. There is little of the glitz and hype that one finds at many other Strip hotels, but its prime location offers easy access to New York, New York, MGM, and other favorites, so you won't miss out on the "Vegas Experience."
The Monte Carlo's rooms and public areas are tastefully decorated and even elegant. The restaurants are above average, and there is a large food court for those seeking a quick snack. I hear Lance Burton has a spectacular show, though I haven't seen it myself. The outdoor pool is large and inviting, weather permitting.
Perhaps the best amenity is the Monte Carlo Brewery. Whether or not you're staying at the Monte Carlo, this brewery is a must-see attraction for beer fans in Vegas. They brew four or five different beers on the premises (wheat, pilsner, stout, amber, ?) and all are quite delicious. The brewery offers food, great atmosphere, and live music many evenings.
The only drawback to this hotel is the strong scent of air freshener everywhere you go. This is perhaps the only hotel on the Strip attempting to mask the scent of cigar and cigarette smoke that is so pervasive in Las Vegas-probably the most smoker-friendly destination in the U.S. The intense floral scent recalls childhood memories of my great aunt's upstairs powder room ...
I highly recommend the Monte Carlo for adults staying in Vegas. Kids would enjoy the food court and the pool, but they would probably spend the trip gazing longingly at New, York, New York or the MGM, just across the street.
