| paramchuk's Full Review: Treasure Island At The Mirage |
On our first trip to Las Vegas, we chose to stay at Treasure Island, owned by the Mirage. Even after venturing into each and every casino/hotel on the strip, we were very happy about staying here. Some details:
The Hotel
The hotel is huge, as are most things in Vegas. With nearly 2900 rooms, all of which have been recently remodeled, the hotel was casually elegant. From the outside, Treasure Island was impressive. With a wooden plank sidewalk in front, a small lagoon where the pirate battle takes place, and around the lagoon, a facade of a small town that I am sure pirates must have looted a long time ago, it was very well designed. In fact, we thought of all the casinos, Treasure Island was one of the coolest looking ones.
The lobby was very nicely decorated, and not tacky like expected. I expected old treasure chests with gold in them, old fishing nets, and parrots. But the only place in the casino where it looked even slightly like this, was in the walkway where the shops are, and in the buffet restaurant.
The rooms looked very nice and were quite spacious. Ours had a king size bed, which I assume most have. the room also included a free safe for which you pick the code, a hair dryer, an alarm clock, phone, and other regular hotel goodies. However the soap here was excellent, it was an oatmeal soap and actually felt nice on the skin.
There was a pool at Treasure Island, and it was actually quite small for the size of the hotel. We didn't have a problem finding a lounge chair though, as most people stayed in the air conditioning inside the hotel. They had small Cabana's availiable to rent near the pool. These were $80/day and included a TV, radio, chairs in the shade, fresh fruit, and misters to keep you even cooler. The one thing I found here was because of the small pool, it became murky because of all the sunscreen in it.
The Casino
Not being much of a gambler, I didn't spend much time here. But enough to look around and see some people losing a lot of money. but I also saw some people win. The limits on most tables started at $5, but there were a few $10 and of course the high-roller tables, which I didn't even want to look at...
They had slot machines from a nickle on up to $500. And video poker which started at $0.25. The casino was very clean and although smokey, not too bad on the lungs of a non-smoker. The waitresses came around quite frequently when playing the games. I was at a video poker machine for about 15 minutes and managed to have 2 beer. The service was very good.
The Dining
We ate at only two of the available restaurants at Treasure Island. The buffet, which we ate breakfast, and at the diner for quick dinner. The breakfast buffet was reasonably priced at $7.99 for adults (sorry I don't remember the kids rate) and had a very nice selection of food. They had fresh fruit, eggs (regular and cholesterol free), bacon, sausage, yogurt, french toast...and the best part, fresh Krispy Kreme Donuts!!!! There was also a Krispy Kreme stand upstairs near the free Tram to the Mirage(home of Sigfreid and Roy).
The diner offered a decent selection of food for a decent price. Anything from salads, to chicken fried steak, to pasta...it was all there. I highly recommend the onion rings here. They are huge and are very tasty.
The FREE Pirate Show
Free entertainment, what could be better? Usually free means sub-par. However the pirate battle at Treasure Island was very well done. And it shows, each time the show was on, the place was packed. The Pirate Battle starts at 4:30pm and goes every hour and a half until the final show are 11:30pm. The show was short (8 minutes) but had good explosions, some laughs and a sinking ship! This is a Do Not Miss free treat to see while in Las Vegas.
We paid only $59/night while here...but we went during the off season (summer) and during the week. Prices during the weekend and during the on season are higher.
